Default 5 shot in Mirage nightclub in Calgary

Violence in this city seems to be getting out of control. Just a couple weeks ago my daughters school was on lockdown after a shooting in a house a block from my house in the middle of the day. My daughter found the mask one of the shooters wore.

You should do what I do. Never read the local paper. Never listen to local radio. Never watch the local news. Unless something happens in your back yard you will never know whats going on and it will give the illusion that you are living in a nice safe city. Unless of course you live in a crime ridden area. For instance I was shocked to read a few weeks ago that a man was killed by a police taser here in Red Deer a few years ago. Had no idea.

I subscribe to this school of thought to a certain extent. The media is out there with fear mongering of the highest calibre. You should always be aware of your surroundings and situation anywhere you are at any time, keep a good head on your shoulders and you should hopefully avoid getting into situations like this.

I understand that you could very easily end up being an innocent bystander that just happened to be in this club, but what are the statistical odds? Couldn't I also argue you had as much a chance of getting hit by a car walking home from that club or in a car accident? Or perhaps those odds are even higher?

Very few clubs in Calgary pat you down.. for guys, they usually have the metal detectors and for the ladies, few clubs do purse checks but not all.

Oh yeah, where is this Mirage nightclub anyways? I've never even heard of it, lol.

The club is on 10th Avenue and 6th street I believe. Last I had heard the whole place was supposed to be getting a big renovation and incorporating the liquor store next door into the expansion. Anybody know if that was done already?

Sadly they usually do ... a cop buddy of mine says the safest guy in a crowd of people is the guy they are trying to shoot... Won't be long until an innocent bystander is killed - then maybe the court system will wake up... BRUTAL!

Somebody must have serious rage issues if they feel the need to bring a gun to a club. I mean, I used to get cheezed off when someone would hack in Counterstrike, but that didn't mean I'd go out and off somebody at a public establishment because of it. Club shootings are so 20th century. If you're going to do it, atleast spice things up and bring a railgun instead.

A blind man could hit 5 people in a crowded nightclub. Regardless of the gun he had, he would have had at least 6 bullets, so that suggests what? That Mr. Magoo here put one into the ceiling?

BTW is there a link to a story or anything? Not that I'm not just going to take your word for it....

But more info would be good....

Well, one innocent guy was shot in the face a while back and the shooter is sitting in a cell last I heard. Sad thing is, the victim is now blind for the rest of his life.

Not much the court system can do in these cases. They exist to administer law. Enacting some semblance of sane gun control (ie, remove handguns from the market entirely), that would be a step.

Although shootings are never something to speak highly of, I can't help but conjure up memories of that foam party incident at the Back Alley about 7 years ago, where scores of party-goers had to go to the hospital because the foam was burning at their retinas. It was a disaster of epic proportions, and all I can think about every time I remember it is "how fitting for the Back Alley."

Sure I don't disagree, and I don't blame the courts or the judges because the laws are improperly designed for the world that we live in. If we gave the judges less leeway in terms of violent crime, "ie no house sentences or probabtio for gun crimes" then they would have to apply that law.

However handguns are already prohibited weapons so its not a matter of removing handguns from the market, its a matter of shutting down the illegal gun imports, and making the punishment so prohibative for the use of guns in violent crimes, that we're either removing the offenders from the public for a long long time, or creating a true deterrence system that makes these thugs sit up and take notice.

Thing is is that many times, not all the time, but many times the people who are involved in these situations should be in jail for other crimes and are in and out within 24-hours - if that's the life you choose that's not much of a deterant...

The guns they are using are not coming from "the market" they are stolen, if you can't get them here they will and often do bring them in from the states, so I while in favor of what you suggest - it won't make a lick of difference.

A complete ban on guns, in general, is long overdue. Only trained professionals who have qualified themsleves through extensive and routine physical and psychological testing should be allowed to carry. Otherwise, I see no use, or purpose, for guns in society. This may not address the illegal gun trade / imports into Canada, but the less guns available to the general public, the better. It all adds up.

^^^

It wouldn't surprise me if 99% of all handgun shootings are from illegal guns. Having a tougher bill on handguns won't do anything because everytime a hand gun is found on a bang banger its seized because its illegal anyways.

In a sense, yeah. I don't recieve the local paper and if I did, I woudn't have time to read it anyway. I have Bell TV so I don't get any local TV stations, and I don't have time to watch it anyway with the exception of PVR'd shows and games when I find time. I have satellite radio so I don't listen to any local radio stations (they are not worth listening too anyways).

In the information age, I think most people have easy access to the information they want. While ignoring what they don't want or care to hear about.
