Ooh, that's very cool, it was needed as for every pvr in the home you need two dedicated lines off of the dish, this solves that I believe.

Now that's a solid idea. I've been wondering when this would happen for a few years now. Hopefully shaw follows suit.

I don't think it's available in Calgary yet, but in the rural markets they are offering a Pace box instead of Motorola. You can attach any drive you want assuming it's eSata or something... I haven't tried it yet.

So this would probably require a firmware upgrade to your box in order to add the PVR capability and unlock the USB port, no? Also, If you don't have two lines going to your regular HD box, how could you watch one show while recording another? Seems to me you would need two tuners and two lines.

This totally violates the part of the proposed copyright act that says you can only record and store a show until it is convenient for you to view it. Well, the spirit of the act, if not the letter.
Proposed Copyright Act = stupid

How so?
The content will be encrypted on the attached drive so the consumer won't be able to transfer it elsewhere. It's just simply extending the ability to record more content...that's all.
Solid idea from Bell. (Even though I still hate them)...

^^^ What OilKiller said.
Actually DishNetwork has had this capability to record to an external drive for the last year. The recordings are encrypted to your exact receiver & account. You can't take the hard drive and view it on a different box, even if it's legitimately registered to your name.
Since Bell uses the same tech as DN in the states, I'm surprised it took so long for them to implement it up here.

Nothing new, pretty much SATA will work, if you want you could probably get a 2TB drive for the reciever. DirecTV customers have been doing this for a couple of years. As for me I have a Starchoice DVR and put in a 750 GB internal drive.

The one thing I would really like to know is if this now means you can use a Pocket Dish with the 9242.
That would just be the greatest if you could.

According to this video they've made a deal with Archos for their models 605 and 705. I don't think it's enabled yet though.
http://www.marketnews.ca/videos_detail.asp?vid=48
Here's the Archos site.
http://www.archos.com/products/gen_5/index.html?country=global〈=en
According to what I've read you'll be able to transfer the HDs and stored Archos video to other enabled PVRs on your Bell account but not to your computer etc.

OK, hopefully somebody with a 9242 can help me out.
I went out and bought the Archos 605. Nice little device and so far as a media player it works great. However my 9242 is not recognizing it as a hard drive. I called Bell about it and they say I should return the Archos and exchange it. However I got this from the overseas tech support team, and my experience is they are so far 0/5 in being able to offer service. I don't want to take it back and exchange it until I'm sure it isn't a problem with the USB on my 9242; or possibly that the 9242 doesn't support the device in spite of it being on their website.
Is there anybody willing to let me come over to try it on their 9242? What's in it for you? Well, you get a chance to see how this thing works in action.
And in case anybody is wondering, I did install the Dish Network Widget onto it already.

Like I said in my previous post. " I dont' think it's been enabled yet though". I hope it works out for you.
I've heard that if you pick the French option on Bell's phone in menu, you should get better service as the tech's are bilingual and actually know what a 9242 is as they've probably seen one.

So I phoned ExpressVU....I mean Bell TV to find out when the 9200 would be enabled for the external HD. Just to find out there are no plans to have the 9200 compatible with an external HD and never will be!!!
So I spoke to the retentions department about what they would do for me about getting a 9242 at a cheaper cost. To my surprise they offer me the 9242 for the normal price of $599, but are giving me a $300 bill credit, 2 months free and 30% off for 6 months after that. To bring the total refund to $575 and some change.
I was freakin' shocked!
So now I am paying a net price of $25 for a 9242 and can now can sell the two 9200's in my living room as I only had them both set up for more capacity. I am happy with a 9200 in my bedroom as I never use it. So by the time I sell those 2 9200's I will get a free 9242 and free LaCie HD.
Maybe with the name change they changed their customer service approach? Who knows but I got pretty lucky...
