Wow. Devils with one of the biggest upsets of the year ending the streak of the Oilers with a third period comback.

Meanwhile the Flames get 4 goals from Iggy but lose Belzabub to an injury.

Hawks top two lines ended up even in this game, but bottom 2 and 3rd defensive pair were horrid.

Alexei Kovalev got a goal, an assist and a second star and might get an All-Star nomination if he'll keep this way. 6 shots, 3 hits and 24 minutes of ice time in yet another dominating performance for Hawks. Kovalev's trade is proving to be a steal, but it never helps Hawks as a team.

Nicklas Havelid led the way for defense with 5 hits and +1 in 20 minutes of ice time.
Hawks, who scored only one shorthanded goal this season, exploded with 2 in this game.

Alexander Ovechkin surprisingly ended up with +1 and scored his 3rd goal in CPHL.

Martin Erat got 2 SH assists and he wasn't supposed to be on PK at all.

Ovechkin-Cassels-Kovalev line combined for a goal on their first game.

Sean Bergenheim got -3 after SEVEN minutes of ice time. Brent Johnson with 8 saves on 13 shots and Stan Neckar with -4.

Depth and goaltending were the huge hole for Hawks in this one.

Next one is against Canucks tommorrow.

HELL OF A HANGOVER
Devils rally in 3rd to end Oiler streak at 11

Well all good things must come to an end, and considering the chilly temperatures outside Rexall Place today, perhaps it was a good day to stop streaking anyway. The New Jersey Devils turned in an impressive performance and handed the Oilers their first loss in 12 games. The Devils were solid in all aspects of the game and that ultimately allowed them to prevail over the Oilers. Mark Recchi, and Teemu Selanne didn't miss a beat with the substitution of Jan Bulis for Andrew Cassels, and recently aquired Andy McDonald and Alexander Korylyuk also scored for the Devils. Evgeny Nabokov was solid in the nets too turning aside 28 of 31 Oiler shots. Basically more Devil players were able to step up their games and outplay their corresponding Oiler player. Brian Leetch was the Oilers best player posting a goal and an assist but was only to even it up for +/-. Next up is a follow up game tommorrow against the same Devils.

Islanders go Duck hunting

UNIONDALE, N.Y. - The Islanders lit the lamp 6 times in their first game of the new year trouncing the Ducks 6-2.

The Islanders jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game off of Brett Hull's 15th of the season only 39 seconds in and Vincent Damphousse's 10th at 4:40 of the first.

New York came out even stronger in the second period beating Roberto Luongo three times in the second with Comrie's 9th, Datsyuk's 8th and Bure's 8th of the season. Brad Stuart was the lone Duck to beat Roloson in the second scoring his 6th of the season at 7:17.

Rounding out the scoring in the third was Todd White of Anaheim on the powerplay and Brett Hull with his second of the game at 12:59.

"We had a good break and we're looking to make a good run into the playoffs," Hull said after his 2 goal performance.

Pavel Datsyuk finished the night with 3 points, scoring once and adding two helpers making him the third star of the game.

"It's a nice way to start the new year," Datsyuk said, "hopefully, we'll keep it up and keep pace with the teams ahead of us in the league."

The win was Roloson's 20th of the season moving the Islanders a point ahead of the Wild for 5th overall in the CPHL. The Islanders remained in 3rd spot of the Gretzky Conference two points up on the 4th place Capitals.

The Islanders' next game is on Wednesday when they visit the Avalance in Colorado.

Backup Curtis Sanford was solid in the Predator's 3-1 victory over the Avalanche. Fedorov continues his hot play by getting 2 more points.

Stars win second in a row

Dallas,TX- The Dallas Stars won their second game in a row with a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks. Goaltender Kevin Weekes who was acquired over the Christmas break had another solid outting and is now 2-0 as a Star. He also was named the 2nd star of the game in making 28 saves. Jarolsav Bednar and Donald Audette both had good nights with 2 points each and both were named stars of the game.

The first period started out well for the Stars as they scored two powerplay goals. Bednar got his 13 of the season which was unassisted while Vladmir Orszagh chipped in with the other goal fron Aaron Miller and Donald Audette. The Canucks ended the period positively with a shorthanded goal by Mike Sillinger to make the score 2-1 heading into the second period. In the second the Stars dominated, but neither side could get a goal. The Stars outshot the Canucks 10-4 in the 2nd and had a 2-1 lead going into the 3rd.

In the third the Canucks played well enough, however Weekes closed the door when he needed to and both teams traded goals. First Bednar got his 2nd of the game from Audette and Neilson. After that Stu Barnes made it a one goal once again, but after that Weekes shut the door and got the Stars the victory.

The Stars will face the Philadelphia Flyers at home Tuesday night. This will be the Stars first of two meeting with the Flyers this season. Currently the Flyers sit with a 14-17-4-2 record. The Stars will be looking for their third win in a row.

The Calgary Herald

January 4, 2005

Iggy shows why he is the "pop" star!!

Flames 7 Hawks 3

Jarome Iginla showed why he is a dominant player in this league last night as he scored 4 goals against the Chicago Black Hawks.

Sven Bootsma was heard crying last night as he had entered his Safeway score and win contest with a can of Campbells Cream of Mushroom soup. "I vas dis close...dis close to vinning dee millyon dollars. Dat dam Geerroomme. One more goal. couldnt he score one more???", Bootsma was heard crying into a bottle of Heinken.

On a bad note though, the Flames lost Satan in the third period with a hip flexer. His condition is reported day to day.

Iginila and Gonchar were the games first and third star respectively.

TRADE THREATS WAKE UP SABRES
Shuffled lines produce

In the middle of a holiday break that produced some serious trade talks, Sabres GM looooob has elected to shuffle the deck somewhat before breaking up the team. Big forward Josef Vasicek was promoted to the first line and had a big night in the Sabres 6-2 win over Florida. "We can't get too excited" said Looooob "we did beat one of the 5 teams below us in the standings. I would like to see how some of our lines produce when everyone is healthy, but we have been juggling some minor injuries for awhile. Right now Isbister is banged up so he's on the 4th line. Our top line produced today, and Pahlsson and Ekman continue to click on the 3rd line. Niedermayer and Johnsson also had good games in the midst of rumours involving their names." Nothing is imminent right now, Looooob says, despite some rumours to the contrary, leaked out of Buffalo.

Swampy Times

Edmonton-The Devils went up against the hottest team in the cphl yesterday afternoon. Not many gave the Devils a chance to win the game however, the Devils showed up to play, and the result was a huge upset. The Devils ended the Oilers 11 game win streak with a 4-3 come from behind win.

The Oilers jumped out to a 2-0 nothing lead before Teemu Selanne scored his 17th of the season to cut the lead in half. The first period ended 2-1 Oilers. In the second, the Devils tied the game at 2 when Andy McDonald scored his first goal as Devil but less then a minute later the Oilers regained the lead when Brian Leetch fired a rocket shot over the blocker of Nabokov. In the third, another new comer Alexander Korolyuk scored his first of the season in his first game as a Devil, as he redirected a Nik Hagman shot behind Vokoun, and just under 3 minutes later Mark Recchi gave the Devils the lead after a great pass from another new comer Jan Bulis. The Devils held on from there to win the game and ending the Oilers long winning streak.

Nabokov was solid again in goal for the Devils as he stopped 28 of 31 Oiler shots, and the Devils penalty killing was excellent killing off all 3 Oiler power plays.

Up Next: A rematch with in the Oil in the Swamp.

The Smelly Rat
Jan 4, 2005

The shots were the same but the score told a different story Monday night as the Sabers proved to be too much for the Panthers. After going up 1-0 in the first period, the Panthers let in two late goals and were never able to recover as they fell 6-2.

"Tongiht we had an off game" said GM Dave Penney. "We had trouble keeping the puck out of the net. Losing Kevin Weeks, who is considered by many to be one of the best goaltenders in the entire CPHL, was a huge loss for this team" uttered Penney. "He was a standup guy and will be dearly missed by all of us".

Making his debut for the Panthers was Marc Denis. He struggled in the game and will be keeping the bench warm when the Panthers play the Ducks on Wednesday. Panthers GM Dave Penney already stated that he will be rotating two goaltenders for the remainder of the season, a strategy that is not often employed in the league.
