Default Simple Shaw HD Question

I share a house with my landlord. He has a Shaw PVR and I want a Shaw HD box. Will he have to pay more when I get a box or will his bill stay the same? Thanks!

Don't ask shaw! I don't know your situation but this was mine:

I lived in the basement suite of my landlords place. We shared cable, although according to the rules we weren't supposed to as it was considered a separate residence. I wanted an hd box installed so I called Shaw and asked them what would happen to which they replied "well sir, you aren't supposed to have cable. Don't worry, we'll send somebody by tomorrow to make sure that gets disconnected." Very annoyed at how stupid I was.

I don't think you'll pay more to have the box, but you will have to augment the package to get the hd channels (which will cost a little bit more depending on how hardcore you get).

I think they're allowed 4 cable boxes in the house. If they have more I think it's $10 a month per box.

You can't just plug in the box and have it work. It has to be activated by Shaw on the account for it to work. Might have to talk to your landlord and ask him just to add it for you. If you buy the box it won't cost him anything extra monthly though.

Get your landlord to activate it and you should be fine.

That has got to hurt.

I have to agree with what the others have said, that as long as Shaw considers you guys to be room mates and not a seperate suite then you are OK.

The one thing to add for consideration; if you buy an HD box and activate it under his name, the box will be in his name. When you move you may not be able to use the box until he calls in to tell Shaw he has sold it to you. So depending on what kind of rental arrangement you have (ie- no lease because you guys know each other) there is the potential for hassle down the road.

Ya to go from free cable to that was pretty devastating. The worst part about it was telling my landlord who had specifically warned me about doing that (obviously i wasn't listening very hard). Only after it happened did I vaguely remember the conversation.

Cool, good to know to have him call. We're buddies so it shouldn't be an issue. It's a very casual residence so he'll help me out for sure.

Thanks y'all.

Basic HD Package is the same price as Digital Cable from Shaw, I know because that's what I have, as I bought ad HD box (looking ahead to the future), and don't yet have an HD TV to hook it too (well, actually I do, but it's only a 19" and is in the other room), so technically, I have Basic HD, but can't watch anything in HD.

I set the HD box to output 480i so it can display on my TV, and I found out this week that I can actually view the HD channels, the box just outputs them at 480i. This was actually a good find, because we've been having signal strength issues, and watching the HD channels is totally clear. Plus I get the widescreen.

Speaking of signal strength issues, I'm supposed to meet Shaw this afternoon to fix the problem (I could barely get on the internet yesterday as the signal was so bad- digital phone was cutting in and out too), but again, the cable comes into the basement suite (which is currently empty, so I might be safe). I'd rather not be docked for two seperate cable bills. I'm just trying to figure out whether I just say I'll walk around with him to the back, and then open the door there, and maybe they won't realize that it's a suite.
