Default Guy molests and makes videos of his daughter...gets 9 years!

9 freaking years?

This is one of the most heinous crimes there is...and this freak gets basically a slap on the wrist?

YAY Canadian "justice" system once again.

Brutal. I can only hope he gets some inside "justice" once imprisoned.

“You took pornographic still-life photographs of your daughter and made pornographic videos of her,” the judge said.

“The sexual assaults and making of videos were repeated over a lengthy period of time.”

Van de Veen noted the father groomed his daughter, beginning with videos of her naked and then progressing to sexual acts, and plied her with marijuana.

What this guy did is disgusting, however I think what the justice system just did is even more disgusting. This guy should spend the rest of his life in max. prison with a sign on his back saying "I Molested My Daughter". Let's just say he would have a good idea of how his daughter felt pretty quickly!

there was another story of a different guy who abused two different girls under the age of ten. He got 15 years, but the judge gave him double credit for time served. WTF? The guy is a sick #$!% who has basically told him he's probably going to reoffend and we want to let him out early?

I dont know about that, but man, if your own kid isnt off limits, then its seriously no holds barred. Sure as hell, nobody else's kid is going to be safe around this guy.

Even more baffling is the apparent attitude of the judge that this is a 'harsh' sentence? What's the maximum under Canadian law for such a crime? Seems that this was the length sought by the prosecutor... I don't know, I think the judge has the ability to disregard the prosecution's recommendations and sentence someone to the maximum.

these guys tend to be in isolation in prison a lot of the time because of the abuse they get/deserve.

Here is another case of nothing being done that should be done. Our politicians should be trying to get laws for these people changed, but they do nothing. (I could be incorrect, but it's my perception)

Brutal week for the Canadian Justice System. It needs to be revamped to take a lot of the freedom in sentencing that the judges have.

I can't understand why time served in a maximum security prison or hard time should get counted as double. Time is time and it doesn't matter how or where you serve it.

I understand how the fact that this guy victimized his own kid makes it even more disturbing...but the fact that it might somehow could be considered "less disturbing" if he did it to someone outside his own family is in itself extremely disturbing to me. I know you guys dont mean to say it's any less monstrous..it's just a little cultural/anthropology thought.

The "double time served" is, if I'm not mistaken, legislated. The judge doesn't have a choice, that's the way the system operates.

(I'm not going to look it up, although that's how my friends at the Crown tell me it operates)

I think a video camera should be sent to the institutions most respected internal vigilante and then let justice be served.

This is a sick, sick crime.

I guess it's the fact that it is pedophilia combined ith incest that makes it even more sick to a lot of people.

Is this really a "Canadian" justice thing? I would love to know how similar cases are treated in other Western countries. For example, how does it compare with the U.S., England, Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy... etc.?
