THANK-YOU THANK-YOU THANK-YOU THANK-YOU THANK-YOU THANK-YOU THANK-YOU

I've been dreaming about buying a Drobo for over a year now but the price has always been too high. I just ordered it and am losing my mind.

I really thought about the whole, buy 4 * 1 Tb drvies and the drobo.

I really need it to be a NAS for me for that price, and then to see they do offer a NAS add on option for $200 - I almost lost it right then and there as its a smidge too much for me for firewire/usb only access.

I am with you though, I have been wanting one for a long time.

I spent weeks (weeks) ripping my entire dvd collection to an external hard drive for use through my apple tv. Works great except for two main issues: backup is a bit*h and if I were to lose them I would be devastated.

I'm currently using Time Machine on my mac, and while it's cool it just doesn't provide me the flexibility I need. After my single terabyte drive is finished backing up my movies, tv shows, pictures and other documents it's sitting at about 96% capacity. What am I to do now? I have a solid backup system, but I'm in a constant state of burning dvds and moving content off my computer to make room (and that's before i dive into my time machine to remove all instances of a backup).

I always said if I could find one for $300 I'd pull the trigger.

Well now that Russic pretty much explained to me what this thing is...I want it, too bad I can't afford it.

But I can only see the price dropping from here. I bought a 705GB external drive last year, and a month later the 1TB drives were CHEAPER.

Make no mistake, the Drobo is the shat.

The fact you can inter mingle differing hd sizes alone makes it worth while for a backup solution for alot of small companies - add to it great apps and hot swappable and its fantastic.

I want it for something like you are, to stream it to my Xbox but I need network access, how difficult would it be to add a network port on the thing instead of making me buy an add on that is 1/4-1/3 the price.

I know when this day ends and I havent bought it I will kick myself, especially if the Apple TV drops in price.

What software did you use to rip your DVD's that sounds like something I would want to do - even if its not free.

Luckily for me it was free. Using a Mac, I used a combination of Mac the Ripper and Handbrake. Mac the Ripper to get it onto the hard drive and then Handbrake to convert it to work on my apple tv.

I'd pass on it for $1300. I have a 3 year old Dell branded 37" TV that is made by Phillips. While it is an OK TV (and I won it as a door prize so no cost to me) I had put it beside a 40" Sony 3 years ago and the comparison of the HD picture was quite noticeable.

I think there is a reason why Dell stopped putting their own brand name onto Phillips' TVs.

What's the benefit of a Drobo versus a cheaper solution like this?

http://www.memoryexpress.com/Product...23479(ME).aspx

Is it really worth the extra money? I don't need the backup/auto raid etc. features of the Drobo. Just a place to stick all my extra harddrives.
