Default Reminder : Sprinkler blow-out time

for anyone that has underground irrigation tis the time when you should be blowing out your sprinkler lines.

not sure how much they are charging in Calgary but here in Lethbridge it will cost you anywhere from 50-65 bucks

if you are doing your own and have any questions feel free to ask

Couple of questions:
1. Anyone got the names of a couple of companies that do this?
2. What size of air compressor do you need to properly do the job yourself?

Hey I wanted to put an underground sprinkler system in my new house for next spring.

Can you give me an idea on costs? I know you probably need to know the size of yard but it is based on square footage covered? Number of sprinklers? How do you price it out?

are you planning on doing it yourself? I don't know about calgary contractors but in Lethbridge for an averaged sized yard for a good contractor it'll run you about 3000

don't need anything large for residential as long as you blow your system out at the same pressure you run it at...60 PSI max

I installed auto-drain valves on the system I installed last year, but I still tried blowing it out using my home compressor. Unless you have a really large compressor, I wouldn't recommend it as you need such a large volume of air to do the job, my compressor couldn't keep a constant pressure.

Mostly it depends on the shape. A 10-15 foot head in a large area will give you the more coverage square foot wise than a 4 foot head that runs down the side of your house. Both cost about the same. An oscillating head will give you more coverage than a normal spray head, but the cost is again a bit more.

If you want to give yourself a rough estimate draw your yard out and draw circles of coverage, getting generous overlapping (or even double) coverage wherever possible. For example if down the side of your house is 6 foot wide, then you will want ( at minimum ) 6 foot nozzles every few(3-4?) feet on alternate sides. I don't remember exactly what this distance is but if you draw the circles and stuff to scale it will be pretty obvious what I mean.

This will give you a rough idea of how many oscillating heads and how many sprayers you will need.

Next consider your zones. You want to make your zones from 5-7 heads in normal cases. So group your heads into obvious choices: Front yard, right side, left side, back yard, flower beds etc.

Once you have this you can estimate the amount of poly tube you will need. Consider where your water will come out of the house ( close to your utility room, somewhere that you can drill a hole in the wall to run pex (or copper) through it to make your main valve box. Measure a run of pipe to each zone, then the pipe to connect each zone. Remember each zone needs to come directly from the main valve box (or if your yard is huge you might have 2 valve boxes running off a main 1" line)

Now add in your valves, valve box, random sched 40 parts, adhesive, primer etc etc, Ditch Witch rental ($100 or have fun digging), rain sensor, and control box(100-200 depending on size, zones, features. More than 8 zones and it gets pretty expensive IIRC) and you are probably looking at $ 300 on top of your heads and 3/4" line.

This might seem random, so if you don't understand something just ask and I can clarify. I did this when I ran a landscaping company for 3 summers so some stuff I am probably forgetting since it seems pretty obvious to me but might not to someone else.

Also, there are places that will plan your yard for a fee and sell you all the parts for it. I know of some places who did it for me, but I have no idea if they do it for people off the street.

Seems about right to me. 3 years ago we were charging 3k for slightly larger than average sized yard in calgary

Regency Irrigation does mine each year. It costs $60 if you pre pay.

I tried to do mine with my small pancake compressor and it has enough pressure but once the tank is empty the compressor just can't keep up. I think you'd need a least a ten gallon tank.

So, would you recommend using 60 PSI, or would you use a lower pressure?

A buddy has a sprinkler system with the an air inlet on it, and I'm pretty sure my compressor could handle it being 17 gallons. He was afraid of us blowing the system up so he always gets it done. I just think that money could be better spent on beer.

50 psi, 40 psi whatever you operate your system at is a safe bet
