Hurricane Gustav now a category 4..could be 5 by landfall on Gulf coast
really bad news for those in the storms path. This thing is a monster and still growing. Katrina was a cat 3 when she hit.
It has already hammered a bunch of islands and will clip Cuba today...then into the warm waters of the Gulf and likely to hit between Alabama and Texas....and New Orleans is dead in its sights...

I hear they're telling people in low lying areas to get out and head further inland. Buses are being set up to take those without transportation. Those that chose to stay will have to do so at thier own risk as there won't be help when they need it - so says the state. Plus the Superdome will not be used to house those affected by the hurricane.
All the what ifs are coming into play and speculations are that if off shore oil refineries are hit the price at the pumps could jum to around $1.70 a litre.
Hopefully the citizens of Orleans take this storm seriously.

where'd you get the info that it could be cat 5?? even in your article it states it will hit at either 3 or 4. Most predictions i saw were 3, just like Katrina which decreased in intensity as it approached to coast.
Not to suggest a 3 isn't substaintial but no need to make something up to sensationalize the title even more...

Gustav strengthens to Category 4 hurricane
Hurricane Gustav has strengthened into a dangerous Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 233 km/h, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Saturday.
The storm is moving toward western Cuba after sweeping over the Cayman Islands as a less powerful Category 1 hurricane on Friday.
By midday Saturday, Gustav was 295 kilometres east of the western tip of Cuba and was moving northwest at 22 km/h.

right....I just made it up to sensationalize things...that's my style. There is a presser on CNN right now as I type this..maybe that link went to an older story...I dont know but believe me its quite true.

Gustav's winds increased to near 145 mph Saturday as it threatened the western tip of Cuba as a Category 4 hurricane
"This makes Gustav an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale," the National Hurricane Center said.

GUSTS. GUSTAV IS NOW AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE
ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE. GUSTAV COULD BECOME A CATEGORY FIVE
HURRICANE SHORTLY BEFORE OR AFTER CROSSING WESTERN CUBA.

God I hope that it calms down, I seem to recall Katrina losing some strength just before it hit. Granted, this one would have to calm down quite a bit it seems.
At least this time if major centers get hit the response from the government should be a lot better. I'm sure they learned a lot of lessons from the scale of the disaster last time.
