Man every time I hear stories of earthquakes or tornadoes etc. I am glad I live in a place where we do not have these natural disasters that can strike and kill at any moment.

I think god is mad at this gay marriage thing
What does that mean?
Hey, the Indonesians (where the epicenter may be from) are mainly Muslim. Maybe he doesn't like terrorists either. :P

This is actually REALLY sad... 4500 dead and counting.

Many places i know very well were completely devestated.

Stories of tourist snorkelers being dragged along the very sharp coral as the water rushed out of the bays before being slammed on to the beaches (and usually kiled or at least severly injured).

Stories of divers being thrown into the rocks at high speeds, killing them.

Stories of beach bungalows and their occupants literally disappearing into the ocean...

Koh phi phi in particular, with Phuket and Krabi provincial area also hit hard...

So sad...

Classified now as an 8.9 a quake so large it apparently even disturbed the earth rotation. 8000 dead and counting.

And it always seems to be the poor countries that get it the worst. Perhaps it's just because their housing isn't as safe though. In any case, very very sad.

I also have a co-worker travelling through Thailand. I hope he's okay.

This is a horrible tragedy. I think it's going to be tens of thousands dead before too long.

If you're able to, please donate to the Canadian Red Cross as they are the most effective method in which to help.

It really is frightening and yet magnificent at the same time, and it really puts things in perspective. People in mass losing what little they actually did own in a matter of seconds.

Jam I really hope your cousin is allright.

This is just getting worse and worse...now 25000+ dead.

The videos of these "walls of water" hitting land is unbelievable.

It could turn out to be the worst natural disaster of our lifetime.

The wave can travel at 800kph+ and is usually barely more then a swell until just before it hits the island and is forced up the ocean floor towards the shore. Then it slows dramatically and can hit land in various different ways depending on the topography of the ground, and the speed and mass of the water. In many cases this time around it SEEMS to have come in as a rapidly rising tide that flooded the land from 2 feet to 5 feet and then a lull and then a huge upsurge with a rise of up to 30 or 40 feet. That lull seems to have led a lot of people to relax for a moment thinking that was 'it', only to be shocked and caught off guard a few moments later by the additional million tons of water crashing down on them.

Talk about being caught off guard, eh? Thinking it is over to only find out it is just beginning...

Its still catching up to the 30,000 plus who died in Bam, Iran earlier this year in an earthquake.

It's a horrible feeling to be talking about lost human lives in such large numbers. But this one could go a lot higher, given that many of the victims were swept out to sea; it'll probably be weeks before we have any sort of accurate death count. Indonesia, for example, has reported 4500 deaths, but government officials suspect that they could have as many as 20,000 dead in Aceh alone. I had initially heard that there were about a dozen people killed in Somalia. They're now saying that hundreds have been killed there, most of them fisherman.

Apparently there are still minor aftershocks today, so this might not be done yet. Frightening stuff.
