CNet has generally very good reviews for this sort of thing: http://reviews.cnet.com/best-high-definition-tvs/

And Pioneer plasmas are *phenomenal*.

Yeah, Pioneer plasma is generally considered the best of the best. And, you pay for that best of the best, no mistake about that. The 60" Pioneer Elite is somewhere around $6500 US.

Panasonic plasma is generally considered a great value. I have the 65" TH-65PZ750U, from last year, and really like it. The TH-65PZ850U that replaced it this year is even better; it has better black levels and 24p processing, and will cost you about $5800 US. The 58" TH-58PZ850U is another option, at about $3500 US.

You can also go for the "professional" Panasonic displays, the TH-58PF11UK and the TH-65PF11UK for about the same money. If they had been the same price as my consumer 65" last year, I would have preferred them. They come without speakers, seperate plug in input cards, and generally more versatility than the consumer models. That would come in especially useful for PC hookup.

The first thing you do is choose between plasma and LCD or a projector. They each have their pros and cons and your choice would depend on your needs. I'd say go plasma for a big screen but if you go LCD and your pockets are deep, I'd consider the Samsung 950 with the LED back lighting or even their 81F which you may find a a good price. It may even have deeper blacks than the Pioneer and Panasonic plasmas.

Besides CNet for reviews, I like this site.

Yeah projector, IF you have a light controlled room, have a good sized wall to fit say a 100" screen'ish, then go projector.

Sigh.. this topic seems to come up monthly. Use the search function and go through the other TV threads...

First you need to figure out your environment... is this for a basement, a living room, a kitchen?

That will influence the type of technology you should look at. There's loads of info in the old threads.
