Computer Help - Can't read DVD
I'm having trouble with my self-assembled computer. So I was able to install Windows XP, some randome programs (ie. Adobe Reader) off the DVD drive and it ran through Boot mode fine. Right now, its the 2nd Boot Device in the BIOS setup.
However, I can't seem to see the DVD drive in My Computer. Any ideas?

So it *was* working when you installed Windows, and then stopped? Have you tried the obvious things like checking to ensure it is still properly connected in case the cable was loose?

hmm.... probably a driver problem.
Try googling the drive's critical info (brand, model #...) and search for a reputable site to download the newest driver for your operating system. Make sure you're careful though, because there are numerous bogus websites out there that claim to offer drivers when in fact they offer viruses.
Maybe someone else knows of a specific website that's safe?

Oh I found it - yes it is a driver problem. Apperently it worked before and in the BIOS, but My Computer won't recognize it for whatever reason. The driver didn't come with windows XP, I've done all the windows updates, and I can't seem to get the driver just be googling (no really, I can't)
Lite On DH-20A4P-04 - anyone can recommend a site that offers drivers for this? (On Windows XP for a OS)

Gee, your brand new drive didn't have a native driver in your ten year old operating system...what a suprise
Sorry, just can't help making fun of people who run ancient operating systems
In all seriousness, assuming the drive is standard PATA and not SATA, XP should see it as a drive without drivers. You might not get lightscribe, dual layer, etc, but it should show up regardless. You should look further up the food chain, for example make sure the controller its attached to is listed in hardware manager, etc.

You mean as opposed to Windows Vista? Can't use Vista, it has computability issues with some software I need.
Connection is PATA. But in Device Manager, it see's my DVD drive as missing a driver, and windows can't seem to update it. This is just weird.

If Windows XP is 10 years old, how old is Windows 98?
