IMO, the only rudeness in this example is that the tip was only $1.88. I always round my tips to an even dollar. If my bill was $12.12, I'd pay at least $15 even for not so great service. Mediocre service and I'd scoop a toonie out of the change from a $20, and good service combined with hotness is an automatic $20 even.

I dont understand. If it was a $12.12 bill, it would make sence to even it out to $14 or $15 if paying by cash, but it not like someone would count out $1.88 in change.

But if your referring to credit or debit, whats the point of evening it out?

They say it's for records purposes. Remembering the spent 15 here, 12 there, instead of remembering 4 digits they only have to remember 2. I think it's stupid.

So you're saying that if my bill comes to $14.88, I'm being stupid by giving her a $20 and saying 'keep the change'? To be quite honest, that's something I've never thought of as being rude, in fact, it's something that's never crossed my mind. Amongst most people I've evergone out with, it's pretty standard to round out the bill and tip to an even number.

I meant with credit cards/debit cards. Sorry didn't realise how that would come off on the internet. Of course paying in cash it's totally different.

24% for crappy service. Lame.

If my bill was $12.12 and I got crappy service I would even it out to $12.20.

I guess I don't see the big deal with rounding when paying debit/credit. Using your example, are you saying it would be better to give $19.88 on debit instead of $20?

When I worked in bars and restaurants the only thing that crossed my mind with a tip was if it was a decent tip or not.

And just to add, going back to paying a tab with friends.... if the bill is $82.43 and there is 4 of us; if I run $25 through on debit it makes it very easy for me to throw my copy of the debit transaction into the pile; as opposed to putting in $24.61

At the risk of de-railing this into a tipping thread, I don't know how you can tip any less than $2.88 on a $12.12 tab. I mean, if the service was outright vindictive, then sure. But if it was crappy because the girl had 17 tables or even had 4 tables but one of them had 11 people, then how anyone can leave less than $15 on the table is beyond me.

I'll tell you what's lame. Leaving an 8 cent tip. That's an insult. If you want to make a point, don't tip at all.
At this point, I'll admit that I once left a 24 cent tip (still, because it rounded up to the nearest dollar). That was because she thoroughly deserved the insult. That was one time out of the hundreds or even thousands of times I've been in a tipping situation. That had less to do with the service and more to do with her being a class 'A' C-WORD.

Tell them they should have paid more attention during math in grade five, then ask to see your bill again, recalculate, and then give them a shiny, easily counted loonie for their service. Problem solved!

They sound like the same kind of waitresses that are unable to comprehend the "visit more than one table on your round" theory. "Wow, I'm so busy!" - yah, because you spend most of your time walking back and forth between the bar and your tables, not actually doing anything useful.

Me too, but I have to say, tipping is a personal thing. Some people feel good about themselves if they tip huge amounts and like to look down on lower tippers (not sure if you fit this category or not).

I'll tip what I want, you do the same. If it's more than you do, I don't care, but I expect the same respect back. The last thing I want is someone who thinks they in some way become a better person by tipping bigger and bigger amounts. Sub standard service deserves lower tips IMO, but if you want to give 15-20% for bad service, that is your thing, and don't hold it over others. It really doesn't make someone a better person--I doubt Mother Teresa was a big tipper.

Again, I don't know if you fit this type, but I certainly know some that do.

I have a buddy that tips a toonie no matter what! It's a bit annoying but he has done it since I met him, 10 years ago, and I don't think he will ever change his ways.

For me tipping is overrated, I think waiters/waitresses almost expect a big tip no matter the service. And this could be due to people not tipping on the service given, but rather just tipping big because they feel they have to.

Agreed 100%. Keep in mind what tipping is for; to reward good service. A good server will make good tips and keep doing their job well, a bad server shouldn't make as much and will maybe change their ways or quit.

So for all you "tip over 20% even if the service is bad"- keep in mind it's your own fault the next time you are waiting too long for your beer.

What's everyone's view on tipping gas station attendents (full service), hair stylists, pizza delivery dudes, newspaper couriers? Restaurant servers seem to take all the glory in the tipping world. Seems like the right thing that they all get their share for good service.

Wow. You are a big tipper! I consider the "norm" to be to use the percentages. 15% for average/good, and upwards. Smoking hot looks alters accordingly.

Now, in your example you are just over-tipping.

If your bill is $12.12, we can assume this is $11.54 before 5% sales tax. So from this if you want to tip 15% = $1.73. (and yes, I would adjust to even it out, but she can have the excess change). So $1.88 is OVER 15% and 15% is a pretty normal tip for average/good service.

Now if you leave her with $15 even, you are tipping her 25%!
And your $18 move is 51% ...

Do what you want, but don't call us cheap while you continue to give no motivation for bad servers to up their game...


Now as another question, what do you tip taxi drivers, pizza guys, and hair-cutters?

Not only do I round it off when I am using Visa. I don't even figure out what the tip is.
If the bill is 42.69, I'll just write in $50 and leave it.

I tip 15-20% for good service, 10% if its crappy. If shes hot and friendly I usually toss in an extra couple bucks.
