Default PS3 Video Output Problems

So I've been using my PS3 with HDMI hook up since I bought it a couple months ago...Now I need to use the simple red white and yellow ones. Problem is...My PS3 doesn't know that. The user guide says to do this:

If the video output settings do not match those required for the TV in use, the screen may go blank when the resolution is changed. The screen should, however, automatically go back to its original resolution after a while. If the screen remains blank for more than 30 seconds, turn off the system. Then touch the power button on the system front for at least five seconds to turn the system on again. The video output settings will automatically be reset to the standard resolution.

If I read that correctly, the PS3 should either recognize that I want to stop using HDMI, or I can tell it to stop by holding down the power button for 5 seconds. I've tried everything I can think of and nothing...

Anyone have luck doing this? Thanks.

Holding down the button for 5 - 10 seconds should work when turning the system on. I'm not sure why it doesn't work for you. I've had this problem before and that was the solution for me.

I've had this issue switching from standard output to HDMI.

All you have to do is turn off the system completely, do the change of output cables. THen flip the power switch in the back, and then hold the ON/OFF button down until it beeps at you.
It will then have detected that you changed the output and will adjust accordingly.

CP tends to have power over things like this.

you have to go to video and audio settings

i have to do that when i switch from hdmi output to optical output for my audio
and make sure you change resolution settings, composite doesn't handle HD
