Default Man fined $12000 for speeding

Wanted to post this in the "how fast have you ever driven" thread, but thought it deserved it's own...

Quote:
A 34-year-old Alberta man was handed a $12,000 speeding fine this week after police caught him roaring down the highway at 263 kilometres per hour - more than twice the posted speed limit.

I wonder how he explained that to his wife (assuming he has one)...

I don't see how this new angle toward high fines but allowing them to keep their licences is making a point of how dangerous speeding is. Wouldn't losing your licence make the point better? (WTH, am I spelling the word licence wrong? It looks wrong, but I can't figure it out.)

Wasn't one of the Scandanavian players fined a ridiculous amount a few years back?

Something like the fine was based on a % of your annual salary.

Teemu Selanne.

When someone is going that fast, they should be fined and have their vehicle impounded, AND they should lose their license.

Idiots will still drive without a license.

But that $12,000 is never coming back.

Edit: He should have faced both the fine and the loss of a license.

Nope, he struck a deal to pay the money and keep his licence.

Good point, this makes me think back to Paris Hilton.

"The maximum fine for speeding in the province is $25,000, he added."

Well if 263 kph gets you half the maximum fine, does that mean you have to be going over 500 to get the full ding?

To go that fast, you have to buy (or steal) a jet of some sort, and drive it on the road. I don't think even the bugatti veyron goes that fast.

The Veyron only goes a pedestrian 416km/h. I'm glad I never got caught going that fast 12,000 would be a tough pill to swallow.

Of course not.

I drive a bike and anyone who goes that fast on one is an idiot.

You have one assumption here that is completely wrong. The point is not to show how dangerous speeding is or enhance public safely; traffic laws and their penalties (with an emphasis on speeding) are first and foremost a cash grab.

Or you could go that speed through a construction zones cause i think speeding fines are doubled through them

It was a joke.

The point was -- if 263 klicks an hour doesn't get you the heftiest fine, what exactly do you have to do to get it?

Someone else mentioned construction zones, and that makes sense.

Good, take his license away for ever and make Alberta roads safer. No sympathy at all for this jacka$$.

EDIT: Just to add something. The ticket wasnt for 12K, that was the fine. I was caught speeding on the road from Beaumont to Nisku when I was younger (maybe 9 years ago). There are lights on the road for the Beaumont turnoff (which go to 70 for the lights) I went through the lights and proceeded to speed back up to 120 (clocked at 122) assuming the speed was back to 100 after the lights.

In Alberta, when you are clocked at 50+ over the post speed you dont get a ticket, you have to go to court. When I went there I was given a fine of $320 + a "vicitms fee" of 600 for a total fine of $920. I can easily see how the judge would consider this person wreckless and a danger to other drivers to warrant such a fine. I was totally my fault, I wasnt used to the road (maybe drive it 10x per year) and at night when you are in a hurry, I probably drove the same way every time but got caught the once. As a consequence I never took that road again . I of course take full responsibility for it as a dumb move.

I was just quoting what the article said the point of the high fine was.

That's easy. If he is just leaving calgary, then just call ahead to edmonton and set up a road block. He will be there in about an hour
