Light beer is for old men. Agree?
I was inspired to start this thread after reading through the "beer thread".
As CP has a vast array of members, I thought it would be a good place to settle a discussion among my group of friends, and see what you guys think.
Scenario:
A few of my friends have started drinking light beer, much to the chagrin of a few of us. Basically we make fun of them for stocking their camping coolers with Bud Light, or ordering it at bars/restaurants. I should mention the demographic. Hetero males, mid to upper twenty year olds. Post secondary educated, some are married.
In general, I believe the following situations are the only times light beer consumption is allowed. (feel free to add)
a) When you're 50+ yrs old
b) When its free
c) Breakfast beer
d) If its a Corona, Sol, etc.
e) If you openly admit you're an ultra-######, drive a Miata, wear Crocs and Lulu Lemon, have a popped collar, and frost your tips.
What do you think? (I'd start a poll but I think only mods can?)
a) Its perfectly ok to buy and drink light beer
b) It's for pansies. Man up and drink a 5%. Light beers = coolers.
c) Screw 5%, go for the malt liquor. Colt45 style.
Anyone else on the anti light beer train, or bug their buddies about it?

I never used to drink light beer. Now that I'm married with kids, I drink it at restaurants, bars or hockey games. I spent 15 years in an alcoholic stupor. Now spending time with my family and kids is more important. I still like to drink beer but I don't want to get plastered. Light beer helps fill the void.

2 reasons to drink light beer in my mind.
a 80 calories instead of 300 - if you have a gut at 28 and don't want to start being one of those "I don't drink" people its a viable way to stop the gut growth and still enjoy beer without worry.
After your 20's you start to better understand you an ass when your drunk, light beer is a way to go out and pace your drinking so everyone else is an ass before you and so no harm no foul.

If my cooler drinking friends turned to light beer, I'd be okay with that. I'm not a light fan myself, but sometimes that's all you've got and you just have to go with it. However, if somebody thinks they can bring Coors Light to slowpitch or after shinny as team beer, they get an earful from me. Don't cheap out ya knobs.

I am in my early 30's and have been drinking light beer for about 5 years now. I find a regular beer makes me feel bloated after about 6 or 8. I can drink light beer all day long. But like you ....we used to give our buddies the gears for drinking it in our younger days.

This is the key.
Once you get into late 20s that belly just starts to build up pretty easy.

Its an adventure everytime I go into the Cooler at my local beer store.
Sometimes its light beer sometimes not. The Brand changes on a bi-weekly basis.
Beer is beer. I buy for the taste not the alcohol content.
If I wanna get slammed on light beer I just drink more......and pee more.......

For me Light beer tastes so poorly that I'd rather drink less beer and excercise more to deal with the calorie problem that 'regular' beer has. What is the point of even drinking beer if it's a re-engineered fabrication of the real thing? The only way that makes sense is if consuming beer is a daily occurance with multiple servings. If so I'd argue that one has already made the judgement call to not be in shape. Working 50+ hours a week and multiple beers a day = no excercise = poor shape = gut (Maybe not a gut as a result of drinking light beer but a gut none the less).

I agree that light beer is for pansies. Try going to a European pub, asking for a light beer, and see if you still feel like you own a pair. If you're worried about calories, drink some water, you nancy boy.
I'd rather drink one good Guiness, than 3 Bud Lights. Quality over quantity wins every time.

If by "light" beer we mean calorie reduced beer, it's kinda silly. Only for people who can't grasp the concept of drinking less beer and actually exercising every now and then. As I said in the other beer thread... don't waste your money on crappy beer! Drink the good stuff.
However, if someone calls me a panzie for drinking vodka tonics in place of beer (when I'm planning on getting drunk without the calories), I'll punch them in the mouth. If I can stand that is... Vodka is killer.

I find light beer doesnt taste good. Its fine on occassion, but if I had a choice I wouldnt drink it.
I dont find standard beer to be so strong that I would need a lighter alternative.

I agree, if a "friend" put that much value on my taste in beer that it was a pain to be around him whenever we went out then I'd probably not be friends with that guy... or at least not go for beers with him. Fortunately none of my friends are that insecure. I like trying a new beer if I see it and if a buddy wants to that "beer connoisseur guy" (we all know one) all the power to him, go nuts and if I go to a micro brewery on a road trip, I don't order a coors light, but If I choose to pick up a case of Coors Light for a back yard barbecue, no one should give a hoot...

Maybe it's just me, but the better friends i am with someone, the more we make fun of each other. But i guess that's just us being "insecure".

Umm.... cause we're guys and its funny.
Same reason we rib our friends about scoring with a fat chick, missing an empty net, or not hitting it past the ladies tee.
Plus, its not like we're being overly negative or too serious like some of you are making it out to be! More playful than anything.

To me, it really depends on the beer and the season. Everyone is different though.
In the summer, I find it really hard to drink darker beers, they just don't taste as refreshing... so I rarely stock them in the beer fridge. I like lighter lagers, Mexican beers, pale ales and yes, even light beer. In any given drinking evening, I tend to switch between 3-5 different kinds of beer, so the variety is nice. Stella Artois Light and Kokanee Light are very refreshing on a hot summer day, and don't taste too much like typical light beer. Miller Lite in the States is a decent tasting one too, and I've heard good things about Heineken Premium Light.
In the colder seasons, its a different story. That's when the Stouts, Ales and Honey Browns come out.
I don't consider myself a wuss for drinking the odd light beer when its hot, nor should anyone else.
