Why are those people chasing him? Dont try and save the idiot, just let him go.

They had harnesses on too, so they were as dumb as him, but slower on getting the equipment ready.
I'm pretty sure there is a way to collapse the kite if not outright let go of it. He probably didn't know what he was doing, and figured he'd give it a shot in a hurricane. Pretty smart.
Scary video though. It looked like a special effect.

A buddy of mine just bought one of these things. He dropped about 3 grand on it, went out in the lake, got lifted up in the air and crashed back into the water the first time out. Now he's scared of it.
I was just reading a "kiteboarding forum" and the general consensus is it happened too fast to react, and you can see that he didn't let go (which appears to be the thing to do) and he didn't use either "the fifth line" or the "QR" (I assume Quick Release) which collpase the kite or actually let it go.
"He shouldn't have been there..." is also what they are saying.

Yeah.....Hurricanes dont typically just appear out of nowhere, they get a fair bit of warning. This guy must have made an effort to be there.

Yeah, I just pointed out that the kiteboarding crowd as a whole seems to think it is a bad idea. They aren't as fast and loose with the "he's a moron..." as we are though.
And yeah, he made an effort to be there. He knew what the weather was doing -- that's why he was there.

I've done it a few times, and the last time I tried it was on a beach in Australia. I have the scars to prove it.
You're attached to the kite through 4 lines, but there's a safety attachment that if pulled, disconnects three of them which lets the wind out of the kite. My guess is the guy got lifted, tried to pull his kite into "neutral" (putting it into a position where the least amount of wind can catch it) and allow him to slowly drop. It looks like he got hit with a gust and went face first into the sand, probably knocking him out. If he pulled his safety when he was 20 feet up he's going to free fall into the sand and probably break his legs, which although is preferable to smashing into a building it's not what is initially recommended if you get caught in an updraft.
Check out this youtube video where some guy gets pulled waaaaay up into the air, and floats back down because he knows what he's doing.
