Default Krispie Kreme leaves Calgary via free agency

Quote:
Doughnuts - Krispy Kreme rode into Calgary just over four years ago boasting a cult-like brand, a reputation for freshness and an air that was expected to put a double-double dose of humility into Tim Hortons fans.
But the same store that saw people lining up for its 6 a.m. opening in 2004 is now shut.
At the northeast location is posted a simple notice stating: "Sorry, this Krispy Kreme location is closed as of August 1, 2008."

Too bad I enjoyed the doughnuts.

Sorry for the bad title to, I'm just excited for hockey to start up

Yah. i noticed that the signs were down last time i was up in the area. i think if they where able to get a better location (more central) it wouldn't have shut down.

What I don't understand is that there are Krispy Kremes all over Sydney and not a single Tim Horton's in the country. This needs to change.

When you have only one location in Calgary it's not surprising it failed. People in the deep south aren't going to travel to the other end of the city for a doughnut. It might have had a chance if it had locations in all areas of the city.

If i remember correctly, didn't they expand to quickly in canada, and ran out of money. I think I remember reading / hearing somewhere that they had planned on opening up more shops around calgary but couldn't because of the money shortage.
That and I think they had some questionable accounting practices.

Their donuts made me sick just eating them. Way too dense, tasted like eating a very sweet cake.

They were building a fleet of Canadian stores based on a fad. The end result was not surprising. I quite enjoyed their donuts though. If I lived around there I would have bought a box a month

I think their mistake was in thinking that rather than having another location or two, they could get by with selling their donuts at gas stations and grocery stores. I love their donuts, but was never willing play "how old are those donuts" roulette; especially with donuts that are best served still warm.

I will not miss them, they were way to sweet and I could not eat them. They made some that did not have the glaze and those were OK but the glazed ones were just horrable, I could feel the cavities growing while I was eating them.

Even though they were in Calgary i never did try one. Wallyworld was selling them but who's to know how old they really were. I could always go to Sobeys and get em when they're still warm.

When i worked night shift for Safeway we always got got to sample one when the baker was done prepairing them. The downside was seeing the black dirty oil they were fryed in

I enjoyed them when they just opened up because I was younger and had a sweet tooth, but now that I'm a few years older, I find their donuts to be too much. I'm surprised they're all that popular anywhere.

Yeah, the novelty of trying them when they opened was it, but after eating one or two, you quickly found out why they are little time bombs for your arteries...

And who in the heck comes up with a whole wheat donut anyway? That's just wrong.

Of course, Timmy's are no better, really....

(Fresh superstore bakery donuts FTW)

Surprised it took this long. That parking lot has been empty for several years.

I mentioned that in my post #11. The problem with buying them from Wal-Mart is you don't know how old they are.

The expanded too quickly everywhere. I also think they began to cannibalize themselves when they introduced the donuts to grocery stores and gas stations.

Starbucks is experiencing a similar thing right now.
