Would You Bang On A Drum For 10 Months?
With all these Olympics talk I wanted to take a mini-poll.
First of all how many of you were in the 1988 Opening Cermonies?
IIRC they used grade 6 kids to make those neat designs of the ski jumper and the olympic rings etc...
If so, how long did you practice for and how often.
I heard that the participants in the Beijing trained for 10 months for 30 hours/week.
If you had a chance.. would you volunteer to rehearse for 10 months to be in 1 performance?

If I lived in a communist conutry and it was a choice between that and hauling concrete you bet I would.
Slightly different situation than here. It's China afterall, if there's one thing they're good at, it's finding a lot of people to do something.

You'd still be hauling concrete on top of rehearsal. Still gotta make a buck.

Yeah, I was in the "Youth Dancers" and it was a MAJOR commitment for the opening ceremonies. I tried out in Grade 6, started in grade 7, and the olympics were halfway through my grade 9 year.
I started in Grade 7, twice a week for about 6 months, then went to every Monday, Thurs and Saturday for about 6 months. The next 6 months were Monday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, and IIRC the final months were pretty close to 30 hours a week of rehearsal.
If you missed one class and didn't have a doctors note you were kicked out......I dated a girl later in life that missed one rehearsal 2 weeks before the games because she had a dance competition somewhere, and they turfed her.

If "hum" means "sing loudly" then yes.

Actually, "hum" means "sing loudly while using 2 ballpoint pens as drumsticks on my computer desk"--but... I didn't really want to put myself out there like that.

Probably didn't help with kicking people out for missing a class;

Holy crap. The Hitler Youth would envy that dedication and ruthless discipline.
How much of this was your idea and how much was it your parents? My mom would have killed to have me in that show but I wanted nothing to do with that kind of thing, and I kinda always figured the other kids (at least the guys) were there because their mom forced 'em.

I was in the opening ceremonies back in 88. That was a freaking long time ago. But I was not part of any of the dancing stuff. I was part of the green circle.
As far as the amount of time we had to practice, I honestly have no idea. I remember being a church, we had a few dress rehearsals, and I am pretty sure we recorded all the songs we sang to be played over the loud speaker.
Man, I wish I could remember more of it.
