Default $6500 in Lottery Tickets

So I read in today's Metro newspaper that some dude won $6500 worth of 6/49 tickets. Does anyone know how much he won in last night's lottery?

I don't think anyone won last night, because the jackpot is up to $36 M for Saturday:

if he won $6500 in lotto tickets, it probably means that he won $6500.............

The guy won the tickets from Jack FM. They gave him $6500 to spend on tickets for tonights lottery.

I'm kinda interested to see how this actually changed his odds....

It does increase his odds of getting the jackpot. Instead of 1 in 13.5M chance of winning, he now has 6500 in 13.5M (assuming it is $1 per ticket).

True, but just the sheer volume of tickets has to account for some change in odds. More combinations = greater overall chance of winning a prizee.

Acutally, I listened to it this morning... the dude at 7-11 where he had them checked predicted he would win $1104. He actually won $1052 I think. I don't know how many free tickets he won though, so if he won a lot, he could still win more money....

The problem as I see it though is are you going to quick pick all of that? And if so, what's the probability of getting the same combination of numbers more than once? Wouldn't you have to fill out those damn forms to ensure you're getting maximun bang for your buck? Or if you punch in that you want $6500 worth of tickets, does it automatically pick different numbers each time?

Like I said above, the odds of matching all 6 will be the same.

So, for example,

lets say he has 6500 different combos.

He has 6500 chances of winning the big prize at 1 in 13.5 mill. The odds stay the same.
No, his odds increase as a whole. Sure each ticket has the same chances to win, but we're not talking about each of his tickets. We are talking about his odds.

If there are 13.5M different number combinations, and he has 6500 of those combinations, then he has a 6500 in 13.5M chance of winning

Keep in mind that one chance costs $2 now though so he really only had 3250 chances to win. That's if he didn't enter any extras.

Yeah, you're right, I'm gonna delete my previous posts because it makes me look like an idiot. Someone once told me what I tried to write as fact, but your explanation makes total sense and Im surprised I didnt think about it that way.

i'm actually quite mad at myself for being that stupid.

I think the odds of getting two of the same sequence is the same as winning the jackpot, is it not?

Basically his chances dropped down to 1 in 4154 chances of winning. Those are way better odds.

Only if he buys two tickets; each additional ticket means he gets an additional chance to match that ticket with every other ticket he has. So his odds of getting 2 matching tickets in buying ~3500 tickets is probably not all that bad, although I don't feel like calculating it out right now (especially as I am supposed to be working), but since a rough approximation tells me he would need about 4300 tickets to give a 50% chance of two matching tickets, I'm going to guess it is around 30 odd percent, which is probably much higher than most people would think.

Its a similar problem as the birthday paradox, which tells you that in any group of 23 people, chances are around 50% that two of them will share the same birthday.

Considering how much you are actually LIKELY to win, as pointed out by Firefly's quote, I'd rather have the money straight up every time. Lottery tickets are a complete waste of money.

I would have kept the 6,500 and not bought the tickets at all. One of the first times I bought a ticket I won 50 dollars and turned it into 50 one dollar scratchies and I only won 3 bucks back I know people who have won big on 649 but only know 4 people who won big on scratchies.
