It is interesting to see how badly the DS is destroying the PSP though. And I have no idea why the Xbox is so unpopular in Japan relative to PS3 and Wii.

I don't know ... the ds/psp battle is very similar to the wii/ps3 or 360 battle ... nintendo has just done really well this generation despite not being a gorilla of tech power.

I would imagine the 360 can't get a hold in Japan because it's seen as an american system that caters to american tastes (lots of shooters and action which the Japanese don't snatch up like we do). The japanese taste is certainly different than the north american taste and the other two systems seem to provide more games for them.

The wii has games that everyone can play. You see wii sports in old folks homes. Not to many people over the age of 30 have time to play games that the PS3 or XBox offer. (games that take time and effort to complete)

Cost plays a big part in the Wii's success as well. Not everybody is willing to pay $500-$600 for a system and I think that's where Sony shot themselves in the foot charging $600 originally for the PS3. People could go out and buy a 360 and Wii(Wii60) instead.

But as far as I go I cant see myself ever owning a Wii unless I have a kid and by the time he/she is old enough to play video games the next generation of systems will be coming out. Pretty much all the games on it that I'm interested in I can get on the 360 and PS3 and I never fell for the Wii-mote hype. I can see how people could find it fun but it just doesnt excite me enough to go out and get one.

Wow, while Im not surprised Nintendo is winning those numbers really are quite huge in comparison. I was a Nintendo kid all the way and eventually switched to PS1 then 2 since the games were more the type I like. Didnt bother with consoles since I bought my pc 4 years ago since the games I can get satisfy me just fine. However if anything appeals to me enough to buy it is the Wii due to its originality.

I think this is a key point, for example my fiance and i can play lots of things on the Wii together, but i can't think of many titles on the PS3 and XBOX she would be interested in that aren't on the Wii anyways.

That I'm surprised about. PSP has much more depth in features and has the same type of games that relates to other playstation platforms. DS just has two touch screens, lol. It should at least be closer.

You underestimate the appeal of a DS with an R4 card... I have Linux loaded on my DS and I don't even know why!

Also is has the same appeal as the Wii. Actually the whole "blue ocean" movement started on DS with their Touch! Generations series.

Edit: vgchartz is known to be a pretty unreliable source. From what I hear, the battle between Wii and XBox in North America may still be very close, though Wii is still expected to surpass XBox this year. Anyway I try not to trust websites that replaces their 's' with a 'z'!

I'm not going to downplay the DS's success as obviously Nintendo is a juggernaut when it comes to handheld gaming. I just want to point out that even though it has such a big lead, its not like the PSP is failing either. I think the PSP has found its own niche market, and is actually taking market share away from Nintendo, since it previously owned 95%-100% of the handheld market.

Also, I just want to add that the DS, like Nintendo's other handheld iterations, will go through a ton of different versions. I myself have 3 different GBA's. People who owned the orignal DS probably all have the DS Lite now. Nothing wrong with that strategy, it just skewers the data somewhat.

The Wii, on the other hand, is destroying Xbox 360 and PS3 in sales. The only knock I have against it is that its still mainly being carried by its First Party games rather than 3rd party games. There's nothing wrong with that, as Nintendo still makes some of the best games (Miyamoto is a gaming God!). But I don't know, I'm starting to find the bajillion number of games with Mario in it getting a little old.

Like it or not, Mario is a gold mine. They could release a game called "Mario Vomits Blood then Passes Out" and it would sell in the millions.

The Wii doesn't appeal to me at all. Seems like a system that is solely dedicated to cute little party games. There doesn't seem to be a lot of high end titles or anything very interesting. And its too underpowered to even try to compete with the GTA's of the world. For all their talk about such a revolutionary control, it hasn't inspired many good games.

I think for all around gaming xbox 360 is so much better..you can still have party games, but also have the option of great high end titles as well.

In terms of graphical power, clearly the Wii doesn't match, but I wouldn't write off the Wii due to game titles. Notable high-end 3rd party games that have surprised me on the Wii include:

- No More Heroes
- Okami
- Resident Evil 4
- Trauma Center

And of course your standard Nintendo staples:
- Zelda
- Mario Galaxy
- Metroid
- Smash

Of course this is coming from a guy who plays Dr. Mario everyday I LOVE that game!

According to NPD, the Wii will overtake the 360 in sales in the Americas this month.

Yes because Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Smash Bros Brawl, Zelda: Twilight Princess, etc., etc. aren't high end titles. The 360 definitely has a lot more good, not great titles than the Wii, but in terms of AAA titles the Wii stands up to both other systems.

Again...not titles that really appeal to me at all. I guess its all a matter of taste.

Still, any system that can't handle the latest NHL game is not the system for me.

My personal opinion is that the Wii is a very good complimentary console rather than the main next (or I guess current) gen console of choice. I have a Wii, but will definitely be buying either a 360 or the PS3 in the near future to go along with the Wii.

You keep changing your stance when things get pointed out to you it's funny.

You're the typical PS3/X-Box fanboy. You accuse Nintendo of only having low grade kid games.

Then it gets pointed out that Nintendo doesn't actually have that problem and has some decent violent titles and suddenly something else is the problem.

So what's your next problem?

Ditto for me as well. Mario and Zelda were cool back when I had a Nintendo but now I get bored very easily playing games like that.
