Default Pemberton Music Festival

Pemberton, (which is around 20 minutes away from Whistler for those who don't know) has announced the first of what will be an annual music festival taking place on July 25th.

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/..._id=1003725081

Huge range of acts:
Jay-Z
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Coldplay
Tragically Hip
Sam Roberts
NIN
Interpol
Serj Tankian
Death Cab For Cutie

...and a hell of a lot more

3 day festival with tickets estimated to be at around $240. Anybody out there in Calgary that would consider coming across the rockies for this one?

After the last NIN concert I'd consider walking through hell barefoot to see them again.

Seems like a decent lineup, why Pemberton?

Pemberton has exploded since the 2010 annoucement, but I'm guessing that its a way to fill all those empty Whistler hotels during the slow summer monthes.

Pemberton is an awesome mountain biking destination as well (not to mention the Whistler bike park is right next door).

Pretty expensive IMO.
I'm planning on getting tickets, but am looking forward to Sasquatch more.
I would say the big names for pemberton are better simply because they are bigger, but glancing over the line up I'm really only going for Tom Petty and NIN. Sasquatch has the better list of "indie" bands.
Sasquatch is imho THE show to goto this year.

EDIT: actually looking into it a bit more, I may not go... No outside booze allowed in the camp ground. That's ridiculous!

Nothing against Saquatch, i mean that is a killer line up, but Bonnaroo AND Langerado easily IMO blow sasquatch out of the water. With bonnaroo how can you go wrong with Pearl Jam, and Metallica. Langerado with Beastie Boys Thievery Phil Lesh The Roots. I guess it all just boils down to personal opinion so who really cares.

Hopefully you all have a place to sleep, they had a guy on CBC news last night that owns a small hotel there, he's not renting any rooms as of yet, he's waiting to see how high he can drive the price up.

Wow that is a pretty stellar line-up. Vampire Weekend - worst name for a band ever (do I smell a new thread?), but they're pretty catchy (if not just a novelty - time will tell). I wouldn't call the overall line-up that disparate; Jay-Z is definitely the one of these things that's not like the others.

Yup... And check out what's banned from the festival grounds:

NO Instruments
NO Campfires
NO Knives / Weapons Etc.
NO Chains / Chain Wallets
NO Blankets
NO Outside Food & Beverages
NO Outside Alcohol
NO Camel packs
NO Tents
NO Flags
NO Refunds Or Exchanges
NO Chairs
NO Umbrellas
NO Video Cameras
NO Audio Recording Devices
NO Bota Bags
NO Professional Cameras
NO Stuffed Animals
NO Pets
NO Drugs & Drug Paraphernalia
NO Fireworks
NO Unauthorized vending
NO GLASS CONTAINERS OF ANY KIND! (This includes, but is not limited to: glass bottles, glass food jars, and anything made of glass). All glass containers will be confiscated upon entry to the festival and no exceptions will be made
NO Mode of transportation (motorized or other) which allows you to travel faster than by foot will be allowed on the Festival Site, Campgrounds or RV Site.

Please check back before you leave for more information on what to bring and what not to bring.

Most of that stuff is a no-brainer, but blankets? Umbrellas? Chairs? Food? You can't bring a couple of snack bars or an apple or anything? Gotta buy their booze, that I understand, but come on, food?
That's going to be a pretty expensive weekend.

This festival is within days of the Virgin thing at Fort Calgary. If I were a betting man I would expect to see a lot of the same names here in Calgary.

Unfortunately, the no outside food thing has become pretty standard. The alcohol one is in place just as much for liability as profit reasons. The Umbrella and chair thing makes sense for visability reasons. Nothing would piss me off more than trying to watch the show and then having someone with a giant umbrella or row of chairs park down in front of me.

The blanket thing does seem strange. I'm guessing this is more of a space issue. There simply won't be enough room for people to claim large patches of land with blankets, which is actually a huge problem at festivals here in Vancouver. You end up with useless hippy types setting up mini-camps by militantly claiming territory with blankets. At the annual folk fest you actually have to race and then fight your way onto the grounds if you want a place to sit, because people with massive blanket claim all the space.

I'm assuming they wouldn't have trouble with you brining a towel or small blanket in to sit on, but want to avoid the space wars that result from larger blankets. Maybe this is some kind of discretionary rule, that allows banning of blankets at the discretion of the security guards.

The strangest rule to me seems like no stuffed animals? They must be worried about people throwing them at the stage?

I understand all of those things other than blankets. I don't know how the grounds are set up, but if it's simply a grass field, blankets would be nice.

That said, Sasquatch allows blankets, outside food (as long as it is in a clear bag), sealed sealed water, and small backpacks.

My earlier post was strickly speaking about the camp ground. I'm under the impression that since you have to buy a ticket and camping that it is in a different, but close location.

I remember when Woodstock '99 went on, the campground and concert was the same place, and they didn't allow people to bring in water. Riots ended up happening, as people were ticked off for having to pay ridiculous prices for water among other things for the life of the festival. Don't quote me, but weren't there lawsuits that resulted from all of it?
(I think I'm thinking of the correct concert)

All said, I'm still thinking about going to Pemberton, but don't know if I'll financially be able to. Who all is confirmed here on CP? maybe a CP meetup?

Is a great site that outlines many of the festivals this summer.
I agree FFDU, Bonaroo does look pretty sweet this year! I guess I've already seen Pearl Jam and it is a little further away than Sasquatch, so I'm looking forward to that.

No it's because there's no better place than a stuffed animal to stash an uzi, which is why I feel the (rather obvious?) "no weapons" rule should be listed as "no weapons and/or stuffed animals."

Love the "no vehicles that allow the user to move faster than walking speed" - everyone should get together and show up on those motorized old-people carts.

Yah I have seen Pearl Jam too, but at GM place, for some reason i feel like seeing them do another 3 hour set outdoors would be amazing!

I am coming back from Australia in 2 weeks, back to van, boo, but am in a bit of a conundrum now. I can't go to Sasquatch because of a wedding, so that leaves two options, Bonaroo, or Pemberton, doing both would be too expensive, going to Bonnaroo would be a wicked road trip, but also really expensive, or Pemberton, would be easy to get too, and cheaper, EDIT: but the lineup is weaker IMO .

This looks like a pretty sweet lineup, but seeing as I'm already seeing Tom Petty in August (14th row on the floor) and going to Bonnaroo, I'll probably pass.
