Default Jackets/Ducks trade

Trade is Jackets send goaltender Jaroslav Halak, forward Hugo Carpentier, and 1 million in 07/08 cap to the Ducks for forward Robert Nilsson.

Halak was going to be our third string goalie this year, so we were most likely going to have him in the AHL all year. Although we did like his potential and this GM has been burned in many a trade involving goaltenders in the past. But in the end we determined that moving for Robert Nilsson who is a right now upgrade with upside at a position of weakness made the deal work for us. Nilsson we feel is a very talented player and has shown good chemistry with Andrew Cogliano before.

In looking at our team for this year right now we feel that we need to add at least 3 top 9 forwards somehow and that Nilsson fits that need and has the potential to grow into a top line producer.

Halak was tough to part with though...maybe he ends up getting some time as the NHL Canadiens top guy this year. I'm facing the possibility of losing Garon as a free agent next year because his rating won't be good enough to warrant keeping him and liked the thought of having Halak as insurance in a worst case scenario. But we'll hope Garon eitehr plays well enough to get a good rating where I want to sign him....or that I figure something else out in the next year.

Not sure why I am bumping this but I thought I would give my take on the deal.

Well, we aren't to thrilled about having halak as a backup at his current rating but he will be resigned for cheap and is a usable backup with a lot of potential. We save some cap space which was huge for our team and we also get a guy who I think will see 20 some games this year in the nhl, maybe more if/when Price chokes!

Thanks to Chad for the easy talks, hopefully this one works out for both squads.

I think Denis will be the back up over Halek

Well hopefully his skills and his one way deal prevent him from losing out to that ######bags 2 way deal.

Seems like me trading a goalie has been his ticket to Superstardom...I bet Halak plays 60 games and win's the Vezina now.

Seems like a fair deal to me although I might give a slight edge to the Jackets here as Nilsson is the more sure bet of the 3 assets and will make the biggest impact this season. Although Halak has good potential and Carpentier is a decent prospect, knowing Ravi's Flames obsession it's more likely Hugo was the main target here and he managed to get Halak added in!

Helps both teams. Nilsson is the best player and as some have pointed out, Halak isn't a sure bet to get a lot of NHL time. Which means is might be a while before his rating goes up. So it helps the Jackets a lot. But then again you can't understate the importance of getting a goalie who plays NHL and has a rating. There aren't that many of them.
