Jackets/Ducks trade
Trade is Jackets send goaltender Jaroslav Halak, forward Hugo Carpentier, and 1 million in 07/08 cap to the Ducks for forward Robert Nilsson.
Halak was going to be our third string goalie this year, so we were most likely going to have him in the AHL all year. Although we did like his potential and this GM has been burned in many a trade involving goaltenders in the past. But in the end we determined that moving for Robert Nilsson who is a right now upgrade with upside at a position of weakness made the deal work for us. Nilsson we feel is a very talented player and has shown good chemistry with Andrew Cogliano before.
In looking at our team for this year right now we feel that we need to add at least 3 top 9 forwards somehow and that Nilsson fits that need and has the potential to grow into a top line producer.
Halak was tough to part with though...maybe he ends up getting some time as the NHL Canadiens top guy this year. I'm facing the possibility of losing Garon as a free agent next year because his rating won't be good enough to warrant keeping him and liked the thought of having Halak as insurance in a worst case scenario. But we'll hope Garon eitehr plays well enough to get a good rating where I want to sign him....or that I figure something else out in the next year.
