Default Anyone own an Archos 605?

Curious if anyone has one of these and what your opinion is. I've always liked Archos but never had one of their products. Figure this might be the one.

I was going to buy this until I decided to get a Nokia N95 8bg. I'll buy just about anything that's not an iPod

I have heard the 605 is quite good. The only apparent downside is that some say the interface is clumsy.

I have one and its worth the purchase. I bought it on Boxing Day 2007 and its been working awesome ever since. The only downside is you have to pay for the plugins (Web browser, Video, Web TV, Web Radio). Apart from that this baby is awesome. It plays lot of video formats (with the optional plugins) and quality is excellent.

The touch screen compatibility is perfect. The use of stylus is really unnecessary. Quality of music streams from Web Radio is pretty good and accessible worldwide. I can watch and listen to asian streams or European streams as long as you have Wifi.

The internet is pretty fast with multiple tab features. You could download and play Java games too which is pretty neat.

Its not too heavy and the battery life is really long.

With a optional DVR adapter, you could record directly from TV, schedule TV programs, etc. The quality/playback of recorded programs are excellent.

I would definitely recommend anyone considering to buy Archos 605 Wifi (80GB). If you want a bigger screensize, you could opt for Archos 705 Wifi or even the GPS version.

This was inevitable but...

32GB iPod Touch > 30GB Archos 605

Mainly because you need to purchase an update for the Archos to be able to use wifi... and the Archos uses a spinning hard drive rather than apple's 32GB stationary flash memory chip. Both are touch screen... the Archos has the DVR capability (with $100 DVR station...) which is cool, but still overall, for sleekness, functionality, completeness, and versatility, the iPod owns it. Plus the iPod is 1/2 the size... and you can get like a billion little extras built FOR the iPod... cases, FM transmitters, sound docks, home theatre sync-ups, etc etc etc.

The deal breaker for some people is that the iPod is like $200 more...

I have the 80 GB version of Archos. So it definitely holds more content. I do agree Apple's products are better and easily compatible with other Apple products but people looking for an alternative can definitely consider Archos Portable media player.

To close the loop on this, I did grab a 605 160gb. I've been happy with it as I use it to pack around basically all my music, to pop on movies for trips, and I can sync with my camera to use it to offload my pics to free up my card. I bought the mini adapter, have not worried about the dvr adapter because I don't really need it.

The only real cons I have is the 5000 song limit and the interface could be a little better I suppose, altering the playlist is not the simplest thing and I have just resorted to editing the xml file on the PC. Some things are not as intuitive as I needed but a quick check on archosfans.com usually pointed me in the right direction.

Buying it I knew it was BIG so I can't knock it for it's size. I do wish I had something smaller to use for biking, but for travel and at work I love the capacity. I also love the unit mounts as a drive and I don't need anything proprietary to xfer files.
