You forgot the gays.

I'm not sure how, but it's gotta be partly their fault.

You forgot rap music too. They're gonna take away your old man card if you're not careful with that kind of lackadaisical ranting.

My first thought before reading the story was: either NE or Bowness (sorry if you live in either neighbourhood)

This happened about 5 blocks from my house. I was a little upset at first, but then I read some of the details and thought, really, when am I ever going to find myself in the alley behind that sketchy restaurant at 3:30AM in some sort of altercation?

The media reports it to be all frightening and Calgary's getting so "scary". But the chances of something like this happening to your average citizen seem pretty low to me.

Or so I tell myself as I drive by the location where it happened.

And it wasn't either of those neighbourhoods/quadrants.

It was just the first thing that ran through my head!
It could have easily happened in Cranston or Edgemont or Mount Royal the way Calgary is now-a-days!(although they don't have restaurants open till 4 am)

I think 2100 block of Centre St. N. would be considered NE by most folk.

Why? Isn't Centre technically the dividing street between NorthWest and NorthEast? So if it's on the west side (and it was)...

Plus I thought the "stereotypical" NE would be considered east of deerfoot.

Is Calgary becoming desensitized...? A thread about a murder in the city and so far it's mostly jokes and an argument over which quadrant it occurred in!!

Is Calgary being desensitized? Are you just waking up out of a coma? Seriously, the entire world can add desensitization to our contemporary character traits. With all the media and shock doctrine being inculcated throughout the western world is it any surprise this is the dialogue for a topic like this? What do you want? It's not like the victim was a flames draft pick or a promising young athlete!

Sorry, but our values are out of whack. Face Facts! And let's not forget, people are insensed easy and even easier when they are drunk. And to anyone, thinking it was in an assumable area, you don't get out enough. Welcome to our world. Safeguard your kids with information, discipline and martial arts. Even then, remind them that any loser can carry a blade. My friend was stuck by a POS at the Point on 17th a year and a half ago by another achivement of human evolution. The funny thing is, is that it's instinct for my friends and I to wrathfully hope for revenge. Is it poor us or poor him?

It's a warzone, and if you don't belive it then you are conditioned to be low voltage battery that can be easily manipulated. IE, you are passive and self-centered, yethave little to say for your neighbors well being.

There isn't enough detail in the story to do much more than joke. Ok, a couple "groups of men" fought it out behind a restaurant at 3:30 AM and someone got knifed.... I'll have to wait for the ethnicity and collective age of the groups of men is revealed before I decide whether to portray one of the following:

- "when I was young..." guy bemoaning the lawlessness of today's youth, despite crime statistics being generally down in the last few years
- bigot guy saying we should send every one of their worthless butts back where they came from, for as we all know native Canadians don't commit violent crime because it is impolite
- law'n'order guy calling for life sentences for all, with a soupçon of illegal violent prison rape added on top of the sentence because the disconnect between being a "defender of order" and advocating illegality is so hard to comprehend
- "Think of the children!" guy who will wring his hands over this happening in a residential neighborhood where children could possibly have been injured by a guy throwing the murder weapon into an open bedroom window
- bleeding heart guy who thinks that the answer to this kind of violence is more gov't money and social engineering programs

I'll check the Sun tomorrow for inspiration, as I don't want to let any facts get in the way of my ultimate decision.
