Camera Advice
Hey Guys,
I am looking for a new camera, a point and shoot with reasonable picture quailty and good optical zoom ( >10x). I noticed that we have quite a few photographers here in the Calgarypuck community and figured this was a great place to get advice. cameras I have looked at include the Canon S5 IS and Panasonic Lumix DMCFZ18K. Any reviews, recommendations and advice would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

I think you have two of the best point-and-shoots already picked out. Staying with either Panasonic or Canon would be my advice.
I have a Panasonic FZ30 that I use when I don't want to lug the an SLR around, and I'm always impressed at how good it is for a point-and-shoot.

I think the new Panasonic is the DMC FZ50 now.
I had the DMCFZ20 at one point before exploding it through rampant abuse and I found it to be a great camera for the duffer.

I just got this from Bb, was able to price match with Dell durring their days of deals last week.

Comparable to the Canon S5
I like the look, I got it yesterday, after taking a few pic I really like the feel. Cannot give any more of an in depth review until I really try to abuse this puppy but initial feelings are good.

I used a Cannon Powershot for a few years and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately I haven't tried any others, so I'm of little help.

My dad got the Olympus Stylus 790 SW and it seems to take decent photos. Plus it is apparently shockproof and waterproof, but I am yet to try that out.

I use a Canon S3 IS and love it. I think the S5 has the flash mount though which comes in handy.
Great zoom on it

If you're into manual control of shutter speed and Aperture you may want to consider the Canon G9 Powershot. Better manual controls + smaller size made me go this way (at the expense of zoom).

I love my S5IS. More bells and whistles then I'll ever use, but not too complicated that I don't know what I'm doing.
Not too sure about the other one, but I'll reccomend the Canon!

2nd.
I got this since i wasn't quite ready to take the plunge to an SLR and like what i see so far. Zoom isn't too bad either (6x) so not as big of a sacrific (like going down the the 3x standard for point and shoots).
Memory Express also has a 16 gig SDHC card (class 6) for like $70 which seems pretty tempting.

I love Panasonic cameras... I have a FZ-30 and it is a FANTASTIC camera.
You can't go wrong with them. Also a cool feature that Panasonic offers is if you reduce the resolution, it will increase your optical zoom... neat feature for me when I am sitting in the nosebleeds at a NFL game.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all the insight. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go with the Canon, I really like the look and feel of the camera and from what i've read online it has all of the features that I'm looking for and takes a great picture.

Thought I'd bump this rather than any of the other camera threads...
so after having my Rebel XTi for about 6-8 months, I am tired of not having a camera when I go to restraunts, bars, or other places out with friends and I can't take the beast. Since I have been impressed with the Rebel, and since my dad has an Olympus I don't like, and I previously had a Fuji Finepix that I hated, I decided to go for a Canon PS SD1100IS. Small little guy, hopefully it'll do what I need it for!

Great zoom on it

I'm a little late on this thread but I'd vote for the S3 as well. Really enjoyed mine. I've recently bought an XTi and I think my S3 is going to find a new home.

I bought a Casio Exilim EX-v8 for this purpose and I've quite enjoyed it. Nice small pocketable package, lots of zoom and really good quality video too if that's something you want to play with. I found it a great little camera to take to games as I could get good pics and good video. It was also handy to have on a recent trip when in certain instances (like a Segway tour of Paris) the XTi would have been too bulky. The SD1100 looks to fit that bill too other than the shorter zoom but for the shots you describe the long zoom wouldn't be required.

I have had three generations of the Panasonic Lumix FZ series, and they have all been great cameras. I'm up to the 50 now and can't complain at all about it.
