Caps wheel and deal with the Ducks

The Capitals were in dire need to spreading out the cap money a bit. With 3 players making over 8 million dollars going into next season, and important RFA's like Ryan Miller and Ron Hainsey needing to be resigned, the Caps needed to clear out a big salary or two...... so.....

Zdeno Chara has been shipped out to Anaheim, along with Ryan Miller and 2.5 million....

Coming back to Washington is;

RFA David Legwand, Rick Dipietro, Ladislav Smid and prospect Eric Fehr.

While parting with Chara was tough, there was too much money tied up in a few players. This deal hinges on the development of Smid and Fehr as full time NHLers. Also on, Miller v. Dipietro, which at this point is a wash.

There is now a huge hole on Defence, this will be remedied before the season starts


In other Caps news... they used their one 4th round draft pick to draft Goalie Joe Cannata ..... who??? He is expected to be a throw in for a trade sometime this year.

Hmmm intresting deal...I guess if it's a cap move. Miller and DiPietro should be pretty similar for salary this season so thats a wash, but loosing a Norris candidate? If it was me I probably would have looked at other moves first, and maybe you did. I guess if you have $74 million invested in 19 players, you'd better make a move lol

Overall I don't think either team got better as the both lose in an area they're weak in

We are really glad to bring in the big man. We have some cap issues ourselves but might be forced to let go of a guy like federov who didn't cost much in the first place. With Vermette coming in we felt that he could slide into the top 6 and boot Legwand out.

Hopefully those guys develop well in the Caps organization, thanks to Hesla for the good talks!

Smid will develop into a decent #4/5 guy, but I'm doubtful Eric Fehr is going to progress much more...he's already had so many injuries and he did struggle last year as well.

I guess next year will determine how this trade ends up, but in my eyes Ravi will likely end up on the + side of this deal.
