Avs draft summary
Round 2, Pick 7: Kelsey Tessier, F
We probably didn't need to take him this early, but we had our eye on the little guy and decided to snap him up. He put up well over a point at game with the Remparts last year and has a ton of skill. But at 5'9 (generously) and 172 lbs, will he be able to make it in the bigs? In the new NHL, we thought it was worth a shot. Sort of a high-risk, high reward pick.
Round 2, Pick 22: Jyri Niemi, D
Hardest shot in the CHL at 97 mph, this offensive d-man racked up 34 points in 49 games with the Saskatoon Blades last year. He can quarterback the powerplay and has even been referred to as the "Finnish Phaneuf." He even looks a bit like him.
Round 2, Pick 25: Matt Calvert
Calvert scored 24 goals and 40 assists while playing in all 72 regular season games for the Brandon Wheat Kings. During is rookie season, Calvert posted a plus-26 rating. Playing alongside WHL Rookie of the Year, Brayden Schenn (2009), Calvert was an integral component throughout the season for a club that was able to rely on its young forwards to produce offensively
Rounding out the Avs selections in the third round were: D Shawn Lalonde of the Belleville Bulls, someone GM Jam26 has been able to watch play in person; D Julien Demers of the Ottawa 67s and G Peter Delmas.
