iOptOut - Canadian "Do Not Call" Service
https://ioptout.ca
Not sure if this is a well-known service or not, but I found it just now while reading about the new copyright act.
I signed up and took my name off a pile of lists. The Herald, The Sun, a bunch of charities, etc etc.
We'll see if it works!
(I also selected the option that deletes my personal info from their server 24 hours after they submit my do not call requests to the various organizations.)

Oh, now it is working.
I just tell the people when they call to take me off the list.

Yeah I got that the first time too, but I tried logging in again and it worked. I think they're just getting hammered right now becuse of the copyright stuff that's being announced later.

It only allows you to check "do call me" (green checkmark)? How do you put the red x "do-not-call-me". Is this a scam?

It works for me... If I click on an "x" it turns into a check, and vice versa.
Also, if you check the "Opt out all" box to the right of each category, it opts you out of all the companies below it.
Edit: I'm using Firefox, though. I have no idea what the site is like in IE.

Seems like a trick - when you do that, there is a green check mark, which according to the legend means "do call me".
Ok - I see it working now, but "site temporarily unavailable" . . .

In Firefox, when I put a check in that box, it xs everything out (turns them off). When I take the check out of that box, it checks everything (turns them on).
It's a bit wonky, I guess, but it's just a personal service offered by that Michael Geist guy.
Anyway, it seems to work ok for me in Firefox.

Yeah I think the server hosting it is getting hammered right now, because of his blogging about the copyright announcements today.

Well the site was set up by a lawyer, so you never know.
Actually, Dr. Geist is a Law Professor at U of Ottawa specializing in internet and technology issues.
His main blog is down right now - Photon posted in the Tech sub-forum that the new copyright law was going to be introduced today, so if that happened his site will be getting absolutely hammered with traffic.

Here's the link to the guy's main blog site. The opt out list is a little graphic on the right.

Apperantly takes some time for the name to be removed, not sure exactly how long.

They tell me 4 weeks. I am pretty sure you can get them in a bit of trouble if they call after that. I will try and find the legislation that says it.

Thanks for posting. I hope the stupid credit card companies and newspaper companies stop calling me. I seem to get a call every night around 6pm...

Speaking of Telemarketers, does anybody else get this one? It usually comes from an impossible call display number like 00000. There is a recording that says something like "This is your credit card company calling. There is nothing wrong with your account, but it is urgent that we speak to you regarding lowering your interest rate." You then press 1 to speak to somebody.
I've pressed to be connected a couple of times. The first was mostly to find out if it was one of my card companies calling (so I could cancel the card.) They were actually so evasive with answering my questions as to who they were, that I told them to take me off their calling list.
The second time the guy was immediately wanting info, and I told him I wanted the name of the company and a contact phone number. They hung up on me right away.
Anybody know who they are? I'd like to file a complaint with the CRTC as they break several rules, but I don't even know where to start.

Haven't experienced this one myself, but personally it almost sounds like a fraud attempt. I remember seeing similar reports on the news a year or two back, and all kinds people were just giving their information away to these pretend credit card companies. Might be worth it to put in an inquiry with the police service, just to be on the safe side...

Ya, I've been getting that one a lot lately. The number does come up as 000-000-0000. Pretty unnerving. I've just hung up every time, but maybe I will connect next time and try to get some info from them. At the least I'll tell them to take me off their list.
The best is when they say they've been calling me in regards to my "Visa/MC/American Express/etc." It's so obvious they're fishing for info...

Is that the one where it starts off "Hi this is Mimi..."?
I've been getting that one everynight, hell she even called at like 10 PM
on a creepier note, I had a call on my cell a few months ago where the number showed 222-222-2222 so thinking it was an error with my caller ID I answered only to hear "David is watching you" in the creepiest voice i've ever heard
