Default Safari 4

Great browser but really glitchy when you first get it. Deleting some Safari files fixed the crashes for me and now it's great, really fast!

First off use the disk utility in your Utilities folder and repair anything that needs repairing
If you have any third-party stuff installed on safari 4, uninstall it.

Trash the preference file (com.apple.safari.plist) and empty the trash so it's gone. click restart Safari.

If that does not work it is a java plug in that is probably causing it, you may have to delete it and re-install it. There was an update today for Safari as well so look for that.

I've been having a lot of crashes too, so I did disk utility thing, hopefully it works. I've never used that before.

Are there any real benefits for a Firefox user to switch over?

I'm staring at CP in both browsers right now (OS X). Looks identical in both windows to me. There is a mild speed boost, but it's in the order of milliseconds.

I switched to Safari 4 for about a week. Went back to my normal Firefox setup. Safari is a nice browser, but it's still held back by a lack of general usability. Probably mostly a subjective preference, but Firefox feels more useful, intuitive and presents a cleaner user experience.

Firefox 3.5 is coming out soon. Should be interesting to see if the Mozilla team can start matching the Webkit team.

If you use IE6 or even IE7, switch to IE8 or to a better browser entirely. If you don't have control, complain to your lazy IT admins till they are forced to upgrade. Do not take "compatibility" as an excuse. It's completely irresponsible for anyone to be using IE6 on any platform anymore.

It's insecure, completly useless at rendering anything close to web standards and generally a poor user experience. Hell, even live.com doesn't render properly in IE6. Just don't.
</rant>

Sorry bout that... dealing with a few IE6 bugs today.

Repair Disk Permissions is the catchall error fix for OS X that CTRL+ALT+DEL is for Windows...

Here here! IE6 is nothing more than an abomination. Nothing makes me happier than looking at web stats and seeing the usage of that garbage get lower and lower. I will probably never forgive IE for it's past issues, but it's nice to at least see that 7 and 8 are at least moving in the right direction.

I've been thinking of making the safari switch for a few weeks now. Perhaps this thread will be my kick in the ass.

Give it at least a week or two's worth of use. Safari does a few things differently - most of them are minor, but it can take awhile to re-wire your brain.

If you're a web developer, be sure to enable the developer menu. It's a very welcome feature to Safari (technically it's been there since 3, but it's much more functional now).

Also, get AdBlock for Safari. Turn it off on this site, of course, though.

ah porn mode private browsing. I've missed you.

I really like it so far. The ability to have an ad blocker pretty much puts it on par with firefox for me. There are plenty of features that I can really see myself using. My only questions now are:

- Is there a plugin to shorten urls?
- CP links all show up in new windows ... is there a way to have them show up in new tabs?

I am still getting a lot of crashes. I haven't seen that update yet for Safari either, where do I get it?

And what is this CMD? That is brilliant.

Oh yeah, I feel stupid now. I thought this was some sort of application or setting in which links automatically open in new tabs.

I gave it a week and unfortunately I've come flailing and crying back to Firefox. It's really unfortunate because Safari is so close to being the perfect browser for me.

I love:
  • the top sites view (it's a god send for web comics because it tells you when the page has updated)
  • close tab X is on the left side of the tab (that's just my thing)
  • with mobileme it syncs all my bookmarks with my phone automatically
I can't look past:
  • I can't update my websites from it. We use Drupal at work and many of the buttons just don't function (this is kind of what we call in the business a "dealbreaker")
  • Many videos won't play or will play buggy (if you pause it won't restart)
  • Many _blank links open in new windows and as far as I can tell there's no way to force those to open up in a new tab without using command-click. Firefox does it automatically and I can still use command click if I want
  • I couldn't find a url shortening plug-in
In the end my issue is the same as it was when I tried safari a little over a year ago: compatibility. If it would just work with pages the way Firefox does I would swap in a heartbeat, but there are just too many "dammit really?" moments. So for now I've switched back to firefox and downloaded plugins that help my sync my bookmarks (xmarks) and help me open a tab to my homepage (New Tab Homepage). Those will have to do for now.
