Question Skate orthotics?

Does anyone have any experience with custom skate orthotics?

I'm not talking mass produced ones like Superfeet but the real deal prescribed by a podiatrist. I have the feet of a 60 year old (I apologize to the 60 year olds out there... sorry about your feet) and have had orthotics for my shoes for a couple of years now. The podiatrist recommended I also get them for my skates since I play 2-3 times a week. I've held off but of late my feet seem to be getting worse.

If anyone has any experience with them I'd appreciate hearing about it. Did they help? Any suggestions of where to go here in Calgary? I'll probably just go back to the place that made my shoe orthotics, but perhaps there's somewhere that has a greater focus on sports.

Thanks.

i don't really have any suggestions on where to get them but if you do make sure you go to a skate shop and getting your skates adjusted. Aside from throwing off the fit you'll probably need to get your blades re alligned

There's a guy in Beaver Mines (on the way to Castle Mountain) that does custom sport orthotics. The guy does it so he can ski all winter, but he's apparently really really good at it.

I think it's called black diamond orthotics, or double black diamond inserts, or something along those lines. Maybe have a look at the Beaver Mines phone book, it can't be that hard to find.

You have tried Superfeet and it doesn't fix the problem?

Is it a new problem or one that has been around for years?

Is it all brands of skates?

Are you SURE you have the correct size/width of skate? This is not a condescending remark. I sold hockey gear for 5 years and have been through tons of 'fit' training and it was amazing how many adults are in the wrong size skates.

Can you describe the type of pain (dull ache, stabbing pain that make you want to punch babies) and the area of your foot that is a problem?

Both feet?

I currently have Superfeet inserts and don't believe they are doing the trick. Traditionally I've predominantly had issues with heel pain (dull to terrible ache) with minor amounts of instep pain for good measure. It was never a big issue in my skates but in the past 6 months I've also started have outstep pain in my right foot while wearing my skates. It's to the point where I'm doing the bird on the ice (lifting my foot) trying to relieve the pain. I should also add that I've always had issues with my right foot supinating. I've had my blade adjusted to try and offset this issue.

Last summer I bought Graf G5's in the hope that big bucks will equal better fit. Unfortunately now I'm not sure that was the right move. Since replacing the skates aren't an option (way too expensive) I figured I'd look into finally getting custom orthotics for my skates.

Kind of off topic, I also have feet ache problems so a couple questions. Where did you get you blades adjusted hixxes? Approximately how much and how long did it take? Also did you notice an increase in performance and comfort? I'm thinking of getting this done as well so any advice you have would be much appreciated.

I bought my skates at Professional Skate in Marda Loop. The blade alignment was included with the skates and only took a few minutes. I'm not sure the cost if you didn't buy them there. You can also try Tuxedo Source for Sports (and I assume the new Source for Sports in the south).

To the best of my knowledge, blade adjustments just correct for supination or pronation. If your issues are related to one or the other I'm sure an alignment will help.

Yah that is the problem with one of my feet.
What do they do exactly? Somehow determine your center point and move the blade left or right on the bottom of the boot?
