Yeah, that's also why Conroy was making 9 million too, Jason Allison got his beauty 8.75 one way deal too. There were like 10 free agents and every team had an extra 6 million in salary cap added. Plus the moron agents were getting bent over the table left right and centre. Remember Turek fan's restructuring bonanza where he kept taking paycuts on all his guys to get three year contracts.

Yeap, I was determined to get a player signed through an agent, up to that point I was losing everyone. So I targeted the best player in UFA and offered the max contract, 1 way... whatever the agent wanted. There was fear that I still wouldn't be able to sign him because at the time the agents were leaning towards package signings... give me the max here plus I want a couple million on another player as well.
Thankfully Hatcher's agent at the time was a good guy and didn't go that route... I ironically, and nothing anyone could do about it.. just the timing of the way UFA and re-rates went. A month after giving him the max contract Hatcher took a hit on the OV meter.
Hatchers play had begun to decline the year before that so it wasn't out of reality.

One last thing about that signing... It also included one of the best sales pitches I think the CPHL has ever seen. At the time I was failing horriably with the agents.. and i was deperate. As the case here I wasn't even trying to nagotiate I was opening the bid with the max numbers.
In the sales pitch, that was a couple pages long of long winded talk I detailed the direction the Hurricanes were headed and how Hatcher's presence would not only be great for hatcher but for the agency as well. By the end of the whole offer I left one final image for the agent to consider
The CPHL got the later changed signing version of this image, this one was just used for the agent and trying to get him signed

Thats some serious effort. I just used to pay pal the agents $5 as a bribe to get them to sign my guys.....as agent...I wanted $10 before even think about being bribed though.
Nah, thats' all BS, none of that ever happened..

Yeah that would be why we no longer have agents.
