Fixing a turntable
So I inherited the sweetest turntable from my grandpa (and the most beautiful amp, radio, cassette combo as well). Classic 80s Japanese over design, an AIWA LX-70. It's freaking amazing, it has all the features of CD players (you select tracks, it seeks, repeats, etc. for LPs) and it even has a beautiful red stroboscope and all these wicked analog things... EXCEPT IT'S BROKEN
Does anybody use turntables, like super high quality 80s era audio gear, or good with repairing these things? Is there a place I can goto in Calgary? Is it worth it to get it fixed? I would like to do so as it also has sentimental value as I remember being enraptured by the slow strobing stroboscope that matches RPMs with output frequency on it when I was a kid.
It's the unit in this video but in piano black with red and metal trim.

I found this LP Gear website but I don't know if these are the parts I need to replace. The turntable is making a lot of noise when spinning and the tone arm seems to be too low (needle is sliding and scratching across the disc when it is seeking tracks).

Looks like one of those linear tracking turntables. Had something similar a few years back but managed to find a collector who wanted to buy it.
My suggestion would be to phone a few electroincs repair shops around town and see if they know of anyone who knows how to repair these turntables.
Nice find btw.

Seriously? L&M does vintage electronics like turntables? I thought they only did musical instruments.
-edit, I just called my friend who used to work @ L&M and he said they don't fix turntables.

Eff...thats right. I used to work there too, and we had a guy then. Sorry bro. Their turntable tech moved to Toronto.

I don't know anything about that place, but it is a possibility.
Can you let me know what you do with it. I did a little home-repair job on an even older stereo and now it needs to be seen by a professional.

Perhaps phone a few places that sell vinyl; they would probably have a good idea or two.

Back in the late 90's there was a store called Radio Craft. Not sure if they are still around.
Otherwise look up DJ Equipment in the yellow pages. DJs still use turntables.

There's an electronics fixing place in the little corner mall on 20 ave and 10 st NW. Don't know the name of it, but if that's at all close to you, you might want to swing by and inquire.

If Long & McQuade or Axe Music can't fix it for you, they might know someone who can. That's what I would suggest.

Minor detail. That just means hes got lots of free time and works cheap.

Ya I was gonna mention Axe Music, check with Mother's Music. You might be SOL though as all of their replacements and repairs tend to be with newer stuff, mostly new turntables that Dj's use. But you never know, phone Axe and talk to Trevor, he's pretty cool and might be able to help you out.

Turntable's are where it's at. Yeah there's inconvenience's here and there, like having to get up to change a record when your uh "busy". But the goods far outweigh the bads. Mainly, the loads upon loads of vinyl that was produced for what... 70-80 years? One trip to recordland although be it can be a rip off proves it. Stuff you wouldn't dream to find on the internet anywhere.
Just keep phoning repair shops, there has to be someone who can repair it out there somewhere.

You could try asking on here:

They could probably help you out, only down side is they aren't local.

There's a guy who specializes in this stuff at Axe Music. Maybe give them a call. I talked to him a bit (also having some tonearm problems) and he definitely knew his stuff. It's a little north of 42nd Ave on Blackfoot.
