And anyone else looking forward to the Preakness? I'm not a horse racing aficionado by any stretch, but I do like to watch the Triple Crown races every year. Knowing nothing about the horses this year, it was neat to watch a Canadian 2yo champion win the Derby at 50-1 odds (Mine That Bird).
But then it was equally surprising to hear the jockey on the Kentucky Derby-winning horse say that the filly he had run on the day before in the Oaks (the race for the girls) was the best horse he'd ever ridden. The filly's name is Rachel Alexandra, and she had won the Oaks by over 20 lengths (a long way). At any rate, a lot of people were disappointed she wasn't run against the colts in the Derby, but she was owned at that time by a fuddy-duddy who doesn't race fillies against colts.
The filly was then purchased, and the new owner wanted to enter her in the Preakness and - maybe - the Belmont. But some other owners, knowing that their chances would be lessened if this speedy filly were entered, threatened to block her entry by entering more horses. Eventually they relented, and now in the Preakness we're going to see just how good this filly is against the colts, including the Derby winner minus the winning jockey, who has chosen to ride Rachel Alexandra instead.
Here's the video of Rachel Alexandra destroying the other fillies:
