Jim McKay dead at 86

For Americans, this guy was the voice of the Olympics. I remember watching ABC's Wide World of Sports every Saturday. I miss that kind of programming.

McKay is a legend among sportscasters.

Of course, he was the guy that broke the news of the murder of the Israeli athletes in Munich in 1972.

A word that gets overused so often when alluding to sports is "legend".

McKay truly is one of them. I was fortunate enough to briefly meet him during the Oly's in '88. The guy seemed so genuinely interested in what others around him had to say rather than hold court and regale others with his myriad of stories. I believe that's what made him what he became in the business.

Also was a HUGE horse racing fan, so the timing is ironic as Big Brown had the sports world focussed on his passion yesterday. His work has helped shape the way we see sports today and forever.
