Associated Press
PHOENIX -- Today the biggest trade in CPHL history went down when 12 CPHL players moved in a single deal.
The deal breaks down as follows:
To Phoenix
Martin Biron
Keith Tkachuk
Anson Carter
Dainius Zubrus
Mike Rathje
Joe Nieuwendyk
To Calgary
Nikolai Khabibulin
Miroslav Satan
Jozef Stumpel
Patrick Traverse
Andy Sutton
Pierre Turgeon
Earlier in the day the Coyotes GM was seen having an anxiety attack, knowing that if he pulled the trigger on the deal it would be absolutely enormous.
Later in the day, after the deal had been finalized and approved he held a press conference... here are some excerpts:
"Well... Nikolai is a great goalie but we just weren't happy with his performance, maybe he needs a change of scenery... and we get a young, excellent goalie in return in Martin Biron!"
"Satan? Sutton? Well... they've been injured alot this year and although they are good players... it would help us more if they actually played. Again, great players were had in return so we lose nothing in that portion of the deal."
"We've had our eye on Tkachuk and Zubrus for awhile, we are very pleased to have them on our team and look forward to seeing what they can do!"
The gigantic move saw both teams #1 goalies and franchise wingers exchanged, something that does not often happen in any league, let alone the CPHL. This move comes after a long period of inactivity for GM Eric Olson of the Phoenix Coyotes, completing only a single trade recently besides the blockbuster today.

Wow. I don't even know how to begin evaluating this deal.
Let's see
- Flames get the better goalie no question. Biron's rating could drop in the near future if he doesn't have a good season if/when the NHL starts back up
- Coyotes may get the best player in the deal though with Tkachuk. Marginal though as Satan is a hekuva player too.
- Turgeon/Niewy - pretty even. Slight edge to Dogs
- Sutton/Rathje - Slight edge to Dogs
- Stumpel/Zubrus - Even
Overall - even deal. Flames get a goalie that could potentially lead them to the promise land, but dogs make gains in other areas.
Congrats on the huge deal guys.

I think that one of the things that really puts it over the edge for the Dogs is that there is also Anson Carter who was basically traded to the Coyotes for Patrick Traverse. :-)

I'd give this one to Phoenix. Just thought, which of a group I would choose if I'd have a choice and realized, I would rather take Phoenix 6.

Not really...I've broken it down like this based on ratings...
Niewy = Turgeon
Tkatchuk = Satan
Carter = Stumple
Zubrus = Sutton
Rathje > Traverse
Biron < Khabibulin
Its a very close trade but the fact that the Flames get Khabibulin is a major factor. Like Grant already said, Biron might go down but I don't think Khabibulin will.

HOWEVER, the fact that Traverse is now on waivers might be just enough to tip the scale in the Coyotes favor. Traverse will be claimed for sure...

I think it's based on last year's standings isn't it?

Well this deal would work better for the Yotes if they hadn't moved three of their best passers to get Tkachuck. Still if Khabibulin can get back to health the Flames will blow past me within 15 games. Great deal by Axel to get his top end tender without moving Gonchar to do it.
Heres how I compare the deal
Khabibulin vs. Biron, advanatage Flames even with the salary difference Khabibulin is one of the top 5 rated tenders in the game.
Rathje vs Sutton, don't be fooled Sutton is cheaper, younger, and rated better
Tkachuck vs Satan slight advantage yotes, but by trading three good passers like Stumpel, Satan, and Turgeon it may work that Satan fits better in Calgary than Keith does in Phoenix
Niewedyk vs Turgeon is fairly even, both are rated the same, but Niewy is cheaper, than again will he play long enough to serve his contract. Still Turgeon has a good passing rating.
Stumpel vs Zubrus is advantage to Phoenix, but Stumpel should do well in Calgary as he has a good passing rating and will get to play with scorers.
Carter vs Traverse is clear advantage to the Coyotes, but NHL Anson Carter is on a serious downward spiral and could be a very expensive 4 liner in the last year of that contract.
It's the biggest deal I've seen in my time (dating back to June 03). From my perspective the Flames got better today. This isn't to say that the Flames won the deal, but I think the players Sample got will fit well with his team. In all honesty my hopes of winning the Martin division with the team I have are probably toast now unless the Flames succumb to a lot of injuries. Now the ball is in my court, Do I try and out do the Flames this year, or keep in mind that if I get hasty and trade too many prospects Anaheim and LA will start kicking my ass next year. Touche Sample00.

"Waiver order will be determined by using the worst team (by points) in the CPHL to the best team (by points). "
Dunno if it means this season or last. Not that sure if Hawks should claim Traverse regardless.

Rathje is rated better in my eyes. Mainly due to much better discipline, and much better durability. Rathje also has much better endurance to log big minutes and comes playoffs times, his 30 edge in leadership and expierience will make the difference. He also has an edge in mobility. I'd take Rathje of these two despite Sutton has better OV.

If you'll take just a sum of all Rathje and Sutton ratings, Rathje's sum is better by 104. With 13 ratings it is sharp 8 per every skill, which is HUGE advantage. But Sutton still wins in OV. I'd be curios to look at sims coefficients when it's making up OV.
Oleg Petrov, who is 67 OV has better sum (848) than Sutton (833), who is 76 OV. Btw, Petrov is available for next to nothing

Well I didn't notice that Carter was in the deal as well. That certainly evens things out in my view. Interesting deal in that despite the fact that 12 players were involved, I don't think either team got jobbed. Even deal. Would have liked to be a fly on the wall when that one got discussed.

Biron played pretty well in Buffalo last season with a record of 26-18-5 on a not-so-hot team.
