Flames Rabbits

I need some help. There are rabbits eating the flowers I planted in my backyard. Now I don't want to have to put chicken wire over them cuz it looks stupid. What can i put or do to stop them from eating my flowers? I don't want to kill them. Should I put a fake OWL on my deck? Suggestions?

Thanks.

You don't want to kill them? That crosses out landmines and IED's...

Get a cat? That might kill them, but they probably won't come near the kitteh.

But that could go horribly wrong....

My husband got some spray and it seems to work. I also heard mothballs help.

A shotgun, a rocking chair and some vigilance should do the trick!!

I have never seen wild rabbits in Calgary. What you are probably seeing are jackrabbits, which are hares. Jackrabbits have black tipped ears.

Is your backyard fenced? That's the first thing. Find any holes that they could crawl through and plug them up. Make sure to seal up even small ones - the leverets are out (baby/toddler jackrabbits) and they're small enough to sneak through many places.

Barring that, there are some products that you can use, including cayenne pepper, to deter them. It will need to be reapplied at regular intervals, especially after rainfalls.

Luckily jackrabbits are incredibly poor diggers and cannot make holes themselves.

Finally, you could trap them. Effective traps are available at Canadian Tire. Use half an apple. Use the other half when you're making jackrabbit stew.

And plant daffodils and foxglove. Lagomorphs hate them. Note that foxglove is quite poisionous and can kill even humans if consumed in enough quantity.

Get some blood meal from a garden centre and circle your plants with it.

Glad I happened to catch the earlier thread, cause Jayems avatar is still freaking me out a bit. Just creepy. Back OT, IMO best way to get rid of rabbits for good is to get a decent dog w/ a high prey drive. Don't know if it's an option for you, but my Husky keeps everything out of my yard. Anything gets in, it's toast or running like the French when the German's showed up.

Note that blood meal is a "hot" fertilizer and can serverly burn plants.

Sorry I don't have any suggestions, but I'm just wondering why this thread has the icon?

I also have a rabbit running wild on my street.

I saw something in the totem flyer yesterday that looked like it could work. It was a motion activated sprinkler. You could set it up to blast anything that crosses its path. It even mentioned something about being good as an animal detterant.
