Obese con gets sentance reduced because of his weight
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl.../National/home
Quote:
A former chef who goes by the nickname “Big Mike” has had his sentence for drug trafficking reduced because the provincial jail where he's incarcerated can't deal with his 430-pound weight.
Michel Lapointe has already served 20 months behind bars awaiting sentencing in what his lawyer described in court as hellish conditions.
“For the first eight months he didn't have a bed adjusted to his size,” defence lawyer Clemente Monterosso said in an interview Thursday.
“He never got a chair adjusted to his size. The chair and the tables were too tight and he could not sit down. In jail, the chairs are bolted to the ground and you cannot adjust them.”

Surprised to not see this posted already. This is competely absurd.

Yeah well, when he gets released they're going to have to roll his fat ass out the front gate and hope he doesnt get stuck.
Although, this does set a pretty good precedent as far as get out of jail free cards go.
Of course, you'd have to be morbidly obese going into jail, becuase theres no way you're gonna get that big on jail food.
It also sends a pretty clear message regarding how seriously the Province of Quebec takes drug trafficking.....

BUT IT'S NOT HIS FAULT HE IS FAT. I am sure he has a thyroid issue or something like that. We can't punish him for societies willing nonacceptance of his condition.

Hey, whoah, dont be dragging society into this all willy nilly.
This is all about Pierre le Guard de Securité, his bad back and the Jail's already astronomical WCB premiums.

Actully it says that he's gained 50 pounds to 425 during his stint in prison thus far.

When I was in school I worked in the office services department of an oil campany and I got to see first had the special treatment that obese people receive. It made me sick. Thousands and thousands of dollars of ergonomic keyboards, chairs, monitor stands, lights, desks, foot rests, and much more to solve a problem that jogging could also solve.
We had one guy who would blow through a $1000 chair a month because he would wreck the hydrolics...

Is he eating other prisoners?
Or maybe he was put on a high 'protein' diet by some of his fellow inmates...

2 really good deterrents right there. Oral rape and cannibalism.
Jail is a fun place, no?

This is Canada though for all we know they could be serving him all he can eat beef wellington. If you've ever visited as part of a educational tour, a prison you'd be shocked by a lot of the amenities and minor luxaries these guys get in this country. Ie television hours, a points system where you can "buy" items in exchange for good behavior/chores.

I wouldn't call those "luxaries". More like "things to keep prisoners distracted with so they don't riot". It would be inhumane to keep all the prisoners locked in complete solitary for their duration, and it would merely result in people getting released who now have severe sociological disorders. Not all people in jail are in there for life.
The posted story is a good demonstration of our society tolerating self-indulgent, abusive behavior that imposes on other people. Eventually we will have to foot the bill for this fat guy's health problems as well.
Honestly, he should be put to work cleaning up roads and work off all that weight. Poof, benefit to society, and he gets healthier. Both sides win (though he probably wants to stay fat and lazy).

Lol.
How many people jumped on me yesterday for the smoking VS obesity post in the smoking in the car thread?
That post about the fatty's all needing loads of capital spent on special expenses to accomodate them (special chairs, desks, etc) really made me upset.
As for the man in question, he should be allowed to sit in the isle with a garbage bag full of popcorn.

They just need to switch him with that American prisoner who sued because he lost too much weight in prison.

Actually it was Bowden Maximum security that we toured. Inmates had the ability to buy a playstation should they earn enough credits (Which I assume would take probably a years worth of work, but a playstation none the less).

Bowden isn't a max prison, it's a min prison. The only max in AB is Drum, is it not?
