That's some walk
http://www.canada.com/theprovince/ne...f-3cba36b34e62
Aside from her efforts in WWI, this part struck me:
"Because the couple was short of cash, they walked almost 1,000 kilometres along the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks to the coast."
This lady and her husband WALKED from Calgary to the B.C. coast
In 1925. When the highway system was non-existant.

It would have been a spectacular journey though, provided it was made in the summer. Actually, I would consider that a life highlight had I done something like that. Can you imagine how beautiful the scenery would have been, especially in 1925 when the wilderness was still largely untouched?

Largely untouched....and trying to eat you.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

I imagine the Grizzly bear population was still largely untouched as well, which makes the walk even more impressive in my eyes.
edit: I never seem to get my comments in fast enough.

Ya, the wildlife would have been a bit of challenge, but a bit of wilderness savvy and a rifle would level the playing field a lot. Rifles were more advanced than the black powder variety by 1925. I assume they were packing a rifle at least, as it would have been a lot easier and cheaper than packing enough food.

And if there's multiple grizzly bears, you can just hunker down behind a wall and use the right toggle to switch targets quickly.

A herd of grizzlies has a likelihood approaching zero though. They're pretty much loners, except for a mamma and her cubs.

Well walking along the tracks does have one advantage - it's pretty flat compared to the rest of the terrain

Plus it's easier to avoid getting lost.

Narrow mountainous tunnels however, would pose a significant threat.
