In need of some advice!!
Hello all
Well I need some advice for a certain situation and hoping some of you can offer some advice on how to handle it.Here goes,
Last march I had my license plate stolen of my car. It had just been renewed a week earlier and the 2 bolts holding it on were tight I am sure, So 99.9% sure it didnt fall off. I went down to a Motor Vehicle registry and got a new one, they made me fill paper work out on the stolen plate. I never thought any more of it really until yesterday. So I am walking by the condo building I live in and theres my plate. Its in the bedroom window of the guy who lives above me(second floor) on display. So the questions I ask myself is Why does he have it in his window??Pretty sure it hasnt been there since last March as its not really an easy spot to see.If I did "lose" it, how hard is it to put a sign in the lobby that he had found it??
So just wondering how I should handle it, not sure the cops will do much witthout it being on a car.And not sure if he'll use it or if he did at one point. Its due to expire next month. It just makes me really mad. What can I do?
Thanks all Brownie

Get out your digicam and take a photo of it. Then go to his apartment and ask for it back. If he says no, point out that you reported it stolen, and he's committing the offence of being in possession of stolen property. If you're feeling more daring, ask him how he came to be in possession of this stolen property.

Knock on his door. Say, "I'd like my license plate back, please".
Contact the police to let them know you have found your license plate so they can take it off their stolen plate list (if they have one).

I'd agree with calling the cops. Let them handle it. Even if all they do is ask him to return the plate to you, one would hope having a couple cops knock on his door would make him think twice about being so stupid as to display a stolen plate in a window again.

You got a new plate # when you went to the registry right? I don't see how he could use it without it being tagged in system as disabled. Don't bother with the cops, they won't do anything most likely. In fact, I would just leave it be. What is your intent here? What result do you want? If you want to find out how he got it, knock on his door. For all you know, he might have found it. But if the plate can no longer be used anyways, just let him keep it.

Agreed. But if the guy gets a guilty look on his face, be sure to congratulate him for the theft.

Call the non-emergency police line, tell them the story, and ask them what, if anything, should be done.
They should know if they care about a plate that was reported missing.

I am going to call the cops...just not sure they will do anything? And yes there is a very slight chance he could have found it.But how hard is it to put a sign on the bulletin board saying "found plate". Its not like he had it on display for someone to see. Its on the 2nd floor, I still dont know how I saw it.
Not sure what I want to get out of this, The plate is no good in a month, but just Pisses you of more than anything.

So I am walking by the condo building I live in and theres my plate. Its in the bedroom window of the guy who lives above me(second floor) on display.
For some reason, I just howled when I saw those lines. Hilarious. Dumb criminals.
Then I thought he might have put it up there thinking the person missing it might see it and contact him.
As a result, his explanation might be quite innocent.

I think it's pretty obvious that they guy is displaying it so the owner will contact him. Maybe he thinks that the plate might not be owned by someone in the building so posting a sign on a board wouldn't help.

He'd better hope that the cops don't pull over the building and confiscate it for having a stolen license plate.
Because your stuffs in there.

Pretty sure my plate never fell off though as I put the new renewal sticker on it a week before it had 2 good bolts holding it on.How often do you see a plate just fall off.Sometimes you see them with 1 bolt holding them on. The lady at the registry said thats the most common time for a plate to get stolen,is when they've just been renewed.

There's no reason to think they weren't stolen at some point. And if I was a theif and stole a license plate I wouldn't want to keep it. I might even toss it into the same parking lot where I stole it in the first place.
Then buddy in your building comes along, finds the plate, and puts it in his window so the owner can see where it is.

When you go to his door, make sure to peek inside to see if he has any suspicious looking extension cords lying around.

I found my wifes stolen bike parked beside a neighbors front door this summer. I didn't have the grapes to do anything about it . . . I will live vicariously through whatever awesome thing you choose to do in this situation.
