Default Internet hookup in a new home

So my wife and I just bought a brand new condo. We got the internet hooked up through shaw the other day. Our new condo has this white box in the wall with all these data ports, which goes to all the plugs in the house.
If I plug my modem into there will it activate all of them? or just the one I plugged it into? OR will I need a router to activate more than one of them?
The shaw guy left my modem hooked up in my living room, and unfortunetley I was not home to ask him if I could have it hooked through these data ports.

I would think you would need a router; especially if there are the same number of ports in the "white box" as there are data ports throughout the house.

But that's what I do, my Shaw box is in the basement along with my router, and then I run into my data ports from there to give me internet in every room. (Plus the garage too. )

Sounds like the "white box" is an ethernet hub.

So, in order to share your connection, you'll need to plug it into a "router" that will handle directing the traffic among all the different computers connected on the network. A simple 60$ stand alone router is probably your best bet. There are other methods (internet connection sharing in XP), but they are less flexible and probably more work.

Run the modem into the router, then plug the router in to the hub. That should be enough to get you all connected (taking some guesses at how your place is setup).
