It's tough because of the time that the news is breaking, I found out about it on reddit actually.

This will be pretty big news tomorrow though. CNN is reporting that there has been one casuality and 15 injuries.

China must have a constant headache trying to manage those North Korean whackos. I am sure they could care a less if they got nuked into oblivion except for the shared border with 50,000+ American troops they would then share. What a pain in the neck.

I'm going to assume that this is only about Lil' Jong getting some experience in craziness before taking over from daddy? Showing how rough and tough he can be.

I can't imagine the North wanting any part of a war with the South........or is there something special going on?

What are the North Koreans going to do?

Start a war? Being a nuclear armed nation means they're also a legitimate nuclear target.

They need constant tension to divert a starving population away from bigger problems. The leadership is essentially a criminal enterprise, almost a mafia family. There's only so much they'll risk before backing away.

The Chinese like to keep them around because it irritates the Americans and Japanese. That's really the only reason North Korea continues to survive.

This has gone on for decades and is likely to go on, barring a fundamental change of thinking at the top, for decades more . . . . .

The persistant export of nuclear technology to fellow rogue states is the thing that might eventually prompt a co-ordinated global response.

An exchange of artillery fire? Not really a big deal. Business as usual for the North Koreans . . . . because you know the South weren't the guys who fired the first shots.

It's really just a personality cult in NK now. Worse thing is, we're stuck with that family in power for awhile. With the starving masses in NK so brainwashed I don't think any attempt to get rid of their leadership succeeding any time soon.

Wasn't it just a month ago they were firing shots at each other? And a few months before that when they sunk the frigate? Things seem to be spiraling out of control now.

This is all about the assession of Junior and the military asserting its muscle within the North Korean Government. You don't put your future leader into a military leadership role and then expect him not to flex his muscles. This makes him look powerful, decisive and in control.

If I remember right, when Kim Jong-il was being groomed he was put into a leadership role with thier intelligence services and shortly afterwards a lot of senior party members "took immediate retirement for health reasons"

The NK military is probably one of the areas of concern for the government in place because it works closely with the Chinese military so it could be perceived as being disloyal, and maybe a little power hungry becasue its usually militaries that instigates coups.

Not before they put a lot of hurt on Seoul with their artillery.

Actually, this is something new. This is the first time since the cease fire was signed in 1953 that one of the countries has fired ordanance into the the other Koreas actual land, and not just in the DMZ.

This is a whole new game.

And a lot of hurt it would be. I think over 18 million people live within artillery range in the greater Seoul and Incheon areas. Seoul would be targeted first and could be flattened using conventional weapons before anything substantial could be done.

Yes the Norks would go down and they would go down pretty fast. The cost of lives in the South would be in the millions even if the Norks did not use a nuclear (or chemical) option (if they have viable delivery).

Old article but still mostly relevant.

Here's an analysis of North Korea's military and artillery capabilities. It's a long read, but worth it... from the last NK craziness thread.

China is the key part in this whole situation.... I don't think South Korea or the US can't influence **** for the North Koreans to stop attacking.
