Default CC Verification Number

I'm fairly new to online shopping.
I'm wanting to order a shirt from shop.retrosportapparel.com
When i went to purchase the shirt, it asked for all of the usual stuff, but also asked for my CC's verification number. I'm under the assumption that you never give that out, is this true for online shopping?
Thanks

Not really sure about this kind of thing, but if you give me your CC number I'll check it out for you.

Nothing wrong with giving that out if you're dealing with a reputable company.
