Default Microsoft closing MSN music - DRM screws over purchasers

And for people who bought music off of it, they will never be able to move that music to another computer. The servers which authenticate the music to allow it to run are going to be turned off. So if the people who bought that music ever want to move that music to another computer, or even upgrade the OS, those songs will not be able to authenticate and will never play again.

Quote:
"As of August 31, 2008, we will no longer be able to support the retrieval of license keys for the songs you purchased from MSN Music or the authorization of additional computers," reads the e-mail seen by Ars. "You will need to obtain a license key for each of your songs downloaded from MSN Music on any new computer, and you must do so before August 31, 2008. If you attempt to transfer your songs to additional computers after August 31, 2008, those songs will not successfully play."

So much for Microsoft's "Plays for sure".

Thing is, I'm not anti-microsoft. To try and create a product that works as well as it does all over the world on so many different systems is really a miracle. Their engineering expertise is amazing. I just don't like the way they wield their market power. And I'm very anti-drm. And when you put those 2 things together it is just evil.

Wow.

I'd suppose this is Mac's fault too?

Is MSN Music the same as their Zune Marketplace? Or is that their new one?

Zune Marketplace is different, and it's why they're closing MSN Music. Going with their more popular brand.

Sorry to derail the thread, but:

Sure, everything's compatible with Mac. But that also means that if Mac doesn't make it, you can't get it.

which automatically nullifies every advantage Apple advertises for the mac, you're just turning it into a very expensive PC. course you can go the other way as well, and load MacOS onto a standard PC and turn it into a very cheap mac

Which is where the "Technically Mac, but you have to become me first" fits in.
