Carrier - anyone watching
So for the last few nights PBS has been running a 10 part 10 hour series on life aboard the USS Nimitz during a 6 month deployment cycle. For anyone thats curious it focuses not only on the pilots and officers but it even deals with the weapons loaders, cooks cleaners warfare officers and garbage detail.
Some interesting things in this show.
One of their young officers on a great career path destroys his career by having sex with a non-comm while on liberty.
A sailor falls overboard and the Nimitz mission is put on hold for 72 hours while they search for him, sadly he's never found.
A sailor gets kicked out of the Navy for being an admitted racist.
A pilot ends his tour and goes home to be with his family
A Marine squadron of F-18's deploys off of the Nimitz. Their senior plane Captain a staff sarge has a striking resemblance to Dion Phaneuf, he was abandoned by his parents at a young age who were carny's (sp?) admits to having a great deal of anger and rage in his and admits that he would likely kill them if he could find them.
Throughout its entire deployment in the Gulf, the flight wing doesn't drop one bomb.
Its on for 2 more nights on PBS at 9:00 if anyone is interested or curious.

That sounds like a cool show. Too bad I missed most of it.
PBS shows like this often end up in the library or even online.
What's a "non comm"?

Yeah I've watched it all so far, great doc.
On a side note, the sound on PBS HD is freaking horrible!!!

PBS is the best television, I miss it. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Don't forget to pledge your support!

My PVR records a lot of shows off PBS, including this one. I've only watched the first one, however. Look forward to the others.

Interesting to see Mel Gibson as an executive producer, and that his Icon Productions company is involved...

I don't mean to turn this into another one of those threads, so just take this as an observation/question...
I watched the first segment of the first episode online and then last night I flipped this show on just after 10. In the first 15 minutes there was 4 or 5 references to religion, including one guy getting baptized on the aircraft carrier. When I turned it on last night, all they were talking about was Jesus. It was even mentioned in the TV guide's episode blurb.
It looks like an interesting show and some of the footage is really incredible, but is this kind of a running theme on there?

It isn't like Mel has been shy about his beliefs.

Not at all.
However there was one entire episode devoted to how people deal with being on a carrier with such diverse religious views. Pretty interesting.
They talk about the many different Christian sects on the ship, they interview a guy who is convinced he's the only jew on the ship, they mention that there are a few muslims on the ship that were trying to get someone to preside over a service, hell they even show the small conven of Wikkans doing their thing.
They interview a few of the athiests no the ship who give the obligitory "don't force your religion on me" speal.
The whole point of the episode is to show the diversity among the crew, not to make the ship out as a big floating church. I think they did a great job of it.

Okay. I just caught a couple of segments (including the opening of the series) and it seemed to come up often. I didn't think it would get much love from this crowd if they were harping on the Jesus thing for 10 hours so I figured it was just a coincidence

Did anyone see last nights final two episides where they were at the end of their deployment? Very emotional. I missed a bunch of the episodes but I'm going to go back and watch them all now. Very well done series. Focused on the individuals involved at all levels. It wasn't what you would expect from a documentry about an aircraft carrier.

I felt so bad for the guy whose pregnant girlfriend got back together with her ex while he was gone. And then doesn't tell him until the day before he comes home. Harsh.

What kind of guy would get together with a pregnant girl while the babys father is off serving his country? And how about the marine that missed his kids birth and had to watch it on the computer. Choked me up. Or the mom with three kids that had to give temporary custody to her ex husband. He was refusing to bring them to see her when she got home to port. She said when your on the ship, things happen at home without you and you are powerless to do anything about it. It really showed how much people sacrifice to serve their country. Also, how alot of them question what it's all about.
