Default The Super mall???

I keep hearing constant rumors of a "super mall " being built in calgary, it is supposedly supposed to put West Ed to shame...is this just a rumor or is there anything to back this up???

I imagine the government isn't paying for the mall.

there are discussions of one being built on the north side of the city, the current issue is that they want to get water for this building from the Red Deer river, which may not be able to handle the needs of this large facility.

There is a big mall being built out by Balzac. The architectural drawings are about 10 feet away from my desk right now.

There was a thread about this a few months back I think. I believe the proposed location was somewhere between Airdrie and Calgary.

That's a false dilemma. The mall would be built using private funds whereas a hospital would be built by the government.

In any event, the mall is supposed to be built outside the city in Rocky View. AFAIK, it's still on track.

I don't understand why people insist that bigger is better. I hate West Ed for two main reasons:

1) West Ed plain sucks. The food courts are crap, and outside of a few high end stores (most of which are women's clothing stores) it's all pretty sub-par.

2) West Ed has sucked the life out of pretty much every other mall in town. Maybe I haven't been to Edmonton often enough, but it seems like every mall in Edmonton is pretty crappy. I figure (and I don't know, so correct me if I'm wrong) it's because West Ed is so high profile that building another mall in Edmonton almost seems futile since it would never get the same recognition.

Chinook is big enough for me tyvm.

If these rumours are true, and the mall indeed ends up being bigger than West Edmonton Mall, why would anyone ever go to Edmonton again?

I realize that, but I just don't see the need for another mall.

It's a Mills mall and it won't put West Ed to shame since it's not nearly as big. Mills malls are generally as big as a bigger sized normal mall but with outlets instead of regular shops.

The only thing that really pisses me off about West Ed is the repeated stores.

Do they really need 3 Gaps?

It's being called the biggest project in Alberta outside of the oilsands.

It's a billion-dollar horse racing track, casino, veterinary college, hotel, and destination shopping centre on Calgary's northern outskirts, and it's raising environmental concerns and questions about its labour impact in a province that no longer even pretends to keep pace with the "Help Wanted" signs.

Welcome, shoppers, to the debate over East Balzac Mall.

Graders and earth movers are busy clearing the ground for it near Balzac, an agricultural hamlet named for the French novelist.

When the mall is completed by fall 2008, the jewels in its 270-hectare crown will be two racetracks - a one-mile thoroughbred track and a seven-furlong standardbred track.

Beside them will be 102,000 square metres (1.1 million square feet) of retail space with 18 anchor tenants, more than 180 specialty stores, restaurants, a movie theatre and a bowling alley.

The people investing in the project think it will make money for them. The reason for building it is as simple as that.

I personally don't like malls.

I think they actually take away from the atmosphere or character of a city, unless they are downtown and complimented by shops and resturants surrounding the mall as well.

Take the Eaton Centre in Montreal (or Toronto) for example. Sure they're malls, but they also are interconnected with other officebuildings, and shopping areas throughout the city. Plus if you leave the mall and go outside (*gasp what a concept*) there are other shops and resturants around.

I believe strongly in the concept of social capital (or at least the concept on some level) where if you build entertainment areas (a mall being an entertainment area, a people trap if you will) you want them to be able to spawn growth.

I think most reading this board would agree there isn't much better than a vibrant downtown core. You get people meeting, shopping, spending their money, exploring, trying new resturants and cafes. With a mall it's more sectioned off. You have to go out segregated in a suburb do your shopping within the confines of the mall, and then out to the parking lot. There isn't anything spawning or growing off of it. If a resturant isn't in the food court (or a chain resturant anchoring a corner) there isn't anything there. Maybe a Perks stand, but that's about it. There aren't nearly as many mom-and-pop shops in malls as there are in downtowns.

I'm not a fan, the only thing worse is a shopping annex, strip mall, or commerical park.

That said I hope your mall does well.
