Default Best of 2007 - Hard Music Edition

Okay, this is for those of us who enjoy a bit of the heavier side of things.

Off the top o' me head I'd throw out these ones (and I'm sure I'll think of more):

Electric Wizard - Witchcult Today
Bongripper - Hippie Killer
Bloodhorse - EP
Hermano - ...Into the Exam Room
Devin Townsend - Ziltoid the Omniscient
Sahg - I (I think this was 2006, but I'm late to that bandwagon and hot damn, did this get a ton of spins in 2007...)
Pelican - City of Echoes
Baroness - Red
ISIS - In the Absence of Truth
Exodus - Atrocity Exhibition
High On Fire - Death Is This Communion
Pain of Salvation - Scarsick
God Is An Astronaut - Far From Refuge
LentO - Earthen
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet
Mammatus - Coast Explodes
The Dillinger Escape Plan - Ire Works
The Ocean - Precambrian
Torche - In Return
Witchcraft - The Alchemist
Wolves In the Throne Room - Two Hunters

etc., etc., etc.

What does the Townsend cd sound like? I heard a song on the radio a couple days ago and it was obviously Devon singing, but it was a bit crazier and more dissonant than anything I've heard SYL do, is this it?

SYL is just one of my favourite metal bands, 'The new black' is the only CD I ever bought twice.

I'd say the Devon solo stuff (and the latest effort kind of falls in line with the prior DTB stuff) is similar to some of the "heavier" parts of SYL, but it's more on the progressive tip (like a Dream Theater, but with less cheezy vox and less guitar noodling although he does solo) as well as it's more of an epic nature with a lot of ambience (for lack of a better term on my part). I'm sure there is somewhere out there one can give it a test listen. I know that you can find it for download (shhhhh...) fairly easily on Google.

Sold! Devon is the type of artist I happily throw my money at.

Probably only 3 or 4 people here to listen to heavy stuff, everyone else loves Death Cab For Cutie & Modest Mouse.

Anyways, I have the Exodus album, still haven't got to it. High on Fire was pretty disappointing, no hooks, no interesting riffs. I like Devin Townsend but can't be bothering to checking him out. I'll look into Pelican, keep hearing about them.

Still Remains - The Serpent (Can be goofy, but I got into it)
Bloodsimple - Red Harvest (F'ing rules)
Monster Magnet - 4 Way Diablo (Stellar)
Type O Negative - Dead Again (Brilliant as usual)
Lordi - The Arockalypse (Not usually my thing but I love it, catchy as hell)
The Absence - Riders of the Plague (Not bad)

Type O Negative is the only band from this thread so far I have listened to, but good on you guys listening to heavier stuff. I too get sick of seeing the likes of Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse or White Stripes on Best Of lists.

That being said, anyone listens to Tapping the Vein (band from Philly, their new album is due soon)?

LOL - I've seen that affection for the aformentioned bands hence me starting this thread. I actually don't mind some of that stuff as well, but it's not my general preference. If I want to listen to something more "alternative" I'll throw on some Dinosaur Jr., Failure or the amazing Jeff Buckley

That new Pelican (or any their discs is worth checking out. One forewarning is that it is all instrumental - which you may or may not dig. I saw them on at the Underground in Calgary about a year ago and it was amazing.

That Exodus is a great disc more so because they somewhat break that same old Thrash mold they are known for. I refer to them as the AC/DC of Thrash. This new disc sees them expand on their sound adding some a lot more melody as well as some more adventurous stuff (at least for them). I think it may be the addition of Heathen guitarist, Lee Altus.

Also forgot about that new Monster Magnet. I did like the couple of times I listened to it. Could be one of those "growers". I still prefer their early stuff (such as 25...Tab and Spine of God) that is a lot more trippy/spacey/epic though.

Devin Townsend is the one of the most important Canadian musicians of all time.

Speaking of Devin, he produced the vocals on the new SOILWORK album, SWORN TO A GREAT DIVIDE. Easily my top metal release of 2007.

I think I am the only person in the world who thinks Dillinger Escape Plan gets worse with every album. Calculating Infinity was their best by far. The Mike Patton ep was good for novelty reasons, but I dislike their new vocalist (guess he's not really that new). I will say that they had no problems replacing Chris Penney on drums.
