The scuba diving company's web site says it offers opportunities to meet "face to face" with sharks and warns there will be "chumming."

Pretty dumb stuff, especially without a cage.

They do cage diving with great whites not far up the coast from Cape Town in South Africa and there's lots of chumming involved. Get the sharks eager for feeding and accustomed to the shoreline and people. It's safe if you have a cage, but not so great if you happen to be one of the many swimmers or surfers along the beaches in the area.

If operators are going to chum sharks it would be considerate of them to do it hundreds of miles away from everyone else.

The worst part of this is that there are probably people dumb enough out there to blame the shark.

On Oahu they also have it (but with cage)

A little on the crazy size, they dump the chum all around, when I was there (after my 4th try) 2 sharks banged into the cage, some creat video footage. Not cheap but definately worth it.

Also, very dodgy looking boat they take you out on

I dive and my goal is to see a shark in the wild, but this is just nuts. I know divers who have seen sharks and say it's an amazing experience. In the right circumstances, encountering a shark is so cool, they tell me. I'll be diving in the Caribbean next month, so maybe then.

However, anyone who does what these guys do is stupid.

I wonder if Liles had visions of Joe Thornton on his way down...

(And yes, I'm trying to drag every other thread I can into this one, just to keep it alive).
