Song ID help

Here's the scoop...am watching season 3 of The Shield. At the end of 'Slipknot' episode (strongest of season 3 so far IMO, but that's another thread!) there is a great song with the following lyrics....It sounds Steve Earlish......

Google tells me it sounds like Steve Earle because it is Steve Earle. The song is called "Ashes to Ashes" although I sense it is not a cover of the 1980 David Bowie hit single.

I thought it sounded like Steve Earle. I guess my first mistake was going to a lyrics website instead of google.

We started watching the show from the beginning. Somewhere along the way we missed a few episodes in a row and I didn't want to start watching it again until I caught up.

Great show and it is brilliantly cast.
