So the girlfriend and I have decided not get each other presents this year in favor of "adopting a family" and buying them loot. Problem is, I'm not sure who runs programs like these. I know the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter runs this program but they aren't answering their admin line at all. The Men's Shelter is run through them so there goes that idea. My company does this through them and it's a little more personalized than the Sally Ann's program - you get details of the kids and parent and buy them stuff.

Anybody know who else runs these? Thanks.

Tried the Salvation Army? They do something similar to that I think.

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

My boyfriends work adopted a family this year, they did it through the YMCA. Its pretty personal, they found out about the family and their situation and such. The Y even supplied them with the family wish list. I'm sure you could call you local Y and find out where the program is run out of.

Thanks flmsfan2004 - I think we'll go with the Y route (note to everyone, it's the YWCA not the YMCA that runs this program). Their program is a bit more personalized versus the Salvation Army's, and supports the Sheriff King's Home, which as I learned is another womens shelter. Sounds like a worthy cause.

Cost is $150 per adoptee (ie $300 for a single mom) with half to be directed towards food and the remaining for a gift. Details about likes and needs are provided about the adopted family. For the nerdy accountants here I might add that your gift is tax deductible which brings things down to about the $100 mark on a net basis.

I have to admit, this was my g/f's idea. Can't take credit for it. I originally wanted Halo 2.

Fellas - this is a great way to dodge the - "Oh crap - what do I get my wife/girlfriend for Christmas" scenario if she'll go along!!!!

Contact Carla at the YWCA if you're interested, 262-0484. Hampers are due Dec 15/16 so get cracking if so!
