Default pvr -> hdd -> dvd

So I got a little unit that I can connect composite/svideo out from my pvr to usb/audio in on my pc. from there I was going to burn to dvd.
Today i tried one out, and after about 30 minutes, ran out of disk space.
It had recorded over 25 gb, so about a gb a minute.
I basically just left it on the default setting, and recorded avi. There is a few options and I may have some compression issues I haven't addressed.
Most of the settings are the same as other avi's I have on the hdd, which are about a 44 minute show and they are about 400 mb each.
I'm using a program that came with the converter, called Ulead 9.
Any ideas on settings I should dick around with to get these recordings to less that a 4 gb dvd?
I'm also going to do this from a vcr that has tapes from an analog video camera, so I don't know what the size of those conversions might be like.

I may have sorted it out. After finding some decent instructions, it said copying straight digital is about a gb/minute. I guess that is what the avi was doing. I tried a bit of try DVD format and it was about 60 mb/minute, which is still too much. I'll have to keep experimenting.

Just curious - what kind of pvr are you using?
